  • Patent number: 4835025
Abstract: A laminate providing an effective barrier to the migration of essential oils and/or flavorings, such as d-limonene and for the retention of Vitamin C, is provided comprising from the outer surface to the inner surface, a paperboard substrate, a web of nylon directly coated thereon, a web of Surlyn overlying and in contact with said nylon web and a web of olefin overlying and in contact with said Surlyn web. Preferably the paperboard substrate is also coated on the external surface thereof with a web of heat sealable polymer. Containers constructed from such laminates are especially useful as fruit juice containers which enable significant flavor and Vitamin C retention in the liquid i.e., fruit juice contained therein over the normal shelf life of the product.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 11, 1988
Date of Patent: May 30, 1989
    Assignee: Champion International Corporation

  • Patent number: 4558814
Abstract: A reinforcement is secured across the bottom major horizontal score of a container in the region of the side seam flap in order to prevent opening or extension of the horizontal score in the side seam flap in the area of the side seam while forming the container or under the gravitational force of the fluid contained within the container.

  • Patent number: 4513036
Abstract: A laminate providing an effective barrier to the migration of essential oils and/or flavorings, such as d-limonene, therethrough is provided comprising, from the outer surface to the inner surface, a paperboard substrate, a web of propylene polymer coated thereon and a web of olefin polymer overlying said propylene polymer web. Preferably the paperboard substrate is also coated on the external surface thereof with a web of heat sealable olefin polymer. Containers constructed from such laminates are especially useful as fruit juice containers which enable significant flavor retention in the fruit juice contained therein over the normal shelf life of the product.

  • Patent number: 4327136
Abstract: In a multi-layer sheet material from which containers adapted to heat food in microwave ovens may be erected, the sheet material comprising a core layer and a transparent surface layer on each side of the core layer, the improvement comprising an intermediate layer located between the core and at least one of the adjacent surface layers, the intermediate layer being a relatively thin layer of polyethylene terephthalate and a design printed on one side of the intermediate layer whereby the design is visible through the adjacent surface layer and is prevented by the adjacent surface layer from being physically contacted.

  • Patent number: 4247588
Abstract: A web suitable for forming liquid-containing paperboard cartons wherein a thermoplastic film is extruded onto a paperboard web, the film having thick strips deposited over those areas of the web which ultimately form the bottom portion of the cartons.

  • Patent number: 4224092
Abstract: The invention provides a dynamic system for heat-sealing an all-plastic material in a continuous process at high speed. The invention includes an all-plastic heat-sealable container material comprising a multiple-layer composite, in sheet form, including a core layer and at least one outer layer on one side thereof. The layers preferably comprise thermoplastic material, the core layer material having a higher softening point than the outer layer material. The composite sheet is conveyed through a converting, side-seaming or other apparatus at high speed, the system being tuned to dynamically heat the outer layers to a molten state for heat sealing, while the core does not soften but remains undistorted. The core is thus thermally insensitive to heat at speeds used in side-seaming the composite, and as such it supports and maintains the structure of the sealing outer layers on its exterior while they are in a molten condition.

  • Patent number: 4183435
Abstract: A polymeric multiple-layer sheet material particularly suited for making containers for food products to be cooked or reheated in microwave ovens has a relatively thick core layer of foamed, high density polyethylene with thinner surface layers of a coextruded polyester, such as polyethylene terephthalate. The surface layers are preferably bonded to the core by suitable adhesive layers.

  • Patent number: 3976527
Abstract: A composite article suitable for forming liquid-containing paperboard cartons is made by laminating an extruded thermoplastic film to an elongated paperboard web. The film has thick and thin strips and the thick strips are laminated to the web over areas thereof which are to ultimately form the bottom portions of the cartons. Thermoplastic material is regulated within an extruder and after extrusion the film takes on a profile imparted by the regulation of the material within the extruder die.
