Patent number: 9485218Abstract: A device to prevent, detect and respond to one or more security threats between one or more controlled hosts and one or more services accessible from the controlled host. The device determines the authenticity of a user of a controlled host and activates user specific configurations under which the device monitors and controls all communications between the user, the controlled host and the services. As such, the device ensures the flow of only legitimate and authorized communications. Suspicious communications, such as those with malicious intent, malformed packets, among others, are stopped, reported for analysis and action. Additionally, upon detecting suspicious communication, the device modifies the activated user specific configurations under which the device monitors and controls the communications between the user, the controlled host and the services.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 2010Date of Patent: November 1, 2016Assignee: Adventium Enterprises, LLCInventors: Steven Alex Harp, J Thomas Haigh, Johnathan A Gohde, Richard C O'Brien, Charles N Payne, Jr., Ryan A VanRiper

Patent number: 6755584Abstract: A writing instrument includes a barrel having a channel with an open end, and a writing element disposed in the channel. The writing element is movable between a retracted position and an extended position. At least a portion of the writing element is resilient and may be resiliently deflected in a direction substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis of the writing instrument. The resilient deflection of the writing element biases the writing element to engage the channel and to retain the writing element in the extended position. Various other features which improve the functioning of the writing instrument or actuator member may be provided separately or in combination. In example, the actuator may be mounted for non-linear movement to extend or retract a writing element. Also a release member may be provided along a side of the barrel to move the writing element out of engagement with the channel.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2002Date of Patent: June 29, 2004Assignee: BIC CorporationInventors: Richard C. O'Brien, Donald A. DeLuca, Michael Kent

Patent number: 6591456Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a cushioning device that is adapted to retain a flowable medium to provide a cushioning effect. The cushioning device has a cushioning member having a deformable bladder member defining a medium chamber and a flowable medium, such as a fluid, retained in the chamber. The cushioning member is adapted to be mounted onto an article to thereby provide a cushioning effect for a user. The cushioning device can optionally have a support element to provide an additional cushioning effect. The present invention also relates to a cushioned article that has a finger-held or finger-manipulated article on which the cushioning device is mounted to provide a comfortable finger grip for a user. The cushioned article is so formed that it can fit within the user's finger grip and that the inflated bladder member can be deformed by the user's fingers or fingertips.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2001Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: BIC CorporationInventors: Donald A. Patent number: 6446658Abstract: The present invention relates to a bleed member provided in a bleed valve assembly having a wall member defining a fluid chamber for retaining a fluid therein. The bleed member has an aperture defined in the wall member and a flexible sealing member located inside the fluid chamber for selectively covering and sealing the aperture. According to the present invention, in a preloading state, the flexible sealing member covers and seals the aperture and, in a venting state, the sealing member is forced to be unseated from the aperture to vent fluid from the valve member. The wall member is preferably flexible and the sealing member may be formed of a material which is flexible and conforms to the shape and configuration of the wall member to seal the aperture.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2000Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Assignee: Bic CorporationInventor: Richard C. Patent number: 4115188Abstract: Disclosed is a method for coagulating the suspended solids in paper mill waste water so that the coagulated solids may be easily separated from the waste water and the clarified waste water reused in the paper making process. Coagulation is induced by first adding sulfuric acid to lower the pH to below 4, mixing thoroughly, and then adding calcium hydroxide to raise the pH to above 10. The coagulated solids separated from the waste water may be used as a landfill, used as a low grade pulp source, or dewatered and burned as a fuel.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1976Date of Patent: September 19, 1978Inventors: Richard C. O'Brien, deceased, by Elva R. O'Brien, executrix

Patent number: 4011986Abstract: A selectively operable interposer mechanism for positioning bars, or the like, in a card selector or coder. Each interposer includes an interposer blade of magnetically responsive material disposed in a longitudinal slot of a nonmagnetic platen. A bar is disposed in each slot and is adapted to be pushed by the interposer blade acting through a rolling disc disposed in the slot between the blade and bar. Disposed directly above each interposer blade is a solenoid coil effective, when engaged, to pivot the associated interposer blade into contact with a permanent magnet which captures the interposer blade. A pusher assembly including the permanent magnet is operative to displace each captured interposer blade and the associated bar longitudinally along their respective slots from a rest position to a displaced position. After a coding or sorting operation, the pusher assembly returns the bars and interposers to their initial rest position.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1976Date of Patent: March 15, 1977Assignee: O.K. PartnershipInventor: Richard C. O'Brien, deceased

Patent number: 3963176Abstract: A combined selector-coder apparatus is disclosed for selecting one or more edge-notched cards from a stack and for edge coding cards by removing selected teeth. The coding apparatus of this invention comprises an integral part of the card selector and includes knife blades actuated by the code bars used to select cards. When a code bar is displaced, it shifts its associated knife blade which in turn cuts a tooth from an edge-notched card disposed in an adjacent card holder.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1975Date of Patent: June 15, 1976Assignee: O.K. PartnershipInventor: Richard C. O'Brien
