  • Patent number: 7731478
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for a packing ring segment assembly for sealing a turbine gas path are provided. The assembly includes a sealing portion including radially inwardly directed teeth, and a dovetail mounting portion including a hollowed out portion including a biasing member internal to the packing ring segment. The biasing member is coupled to the packing ring segment and configured to engage a pair of annular shoulders of a dovetail groove in the turbine such that the packing ring segment is biasing radially outward at relatively low turbine loads and low working pressure, and at relatively high turbine loads and high working pressure a working fluid overcomes the radial biasing member forces and urge the packing ring segment radially inward.

  • Publication number: 20080296847
Abstract: A packing ring in a multi-staged turbine that includes two ring segments joined by a dovetail feature. In some embodiments, the dovetail feature may include a male/female configuration. In other embodiments, the dovetail feature may include an insert/groove configuration. The insert of the insert/groove configuration may include a protrusion that extends from an approximately flat surface of an end of one of the ring segments. The groove of the insert/groove configuration may include a notch in an approximate flat surface of an end of one of the ring segments. The insert of the insert/groove configuration and the groove of the insert/groove configuration may be of a similar size such that the insert closely fits within the groove.

  • Publication number: 20070120329
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a packing ring assembly having a first packing ring segment, a second packing ring segment, a third packing ring segment, a fourth packing ring segment, a first half of a stationary component, a second half of a stationary component, and one or more seal keys. The first packing ring segment and the second packing ring segment are disposed within the first half of a stationary component. The third packing ring segment and the fourth packing ring segment are disposed within the second half of a stationary component. The seal keys are disposed at a midline between the first half and the second half of the stationary component such that each of the seal keys supports the first or second packing ring segment.

  • Publication number: 20060151958
Abstract: A ring segment (100) used to form a packing ring (6). The segment comprises an arcuate shaped piece interfitting with similar pieces to form an effective seal both between adjacent stages of a turbine (1), and an end stage (2) of the turbine and the atmosphere. Each ring segment has a step (14, 15) formed at each end of the segment for interfacing the segment with an adjacent ring segment. The steps are formed on opposite sides of the ring segment and allow adjacent segments to readily interface with each other because an oversize of resulting butt gap (16) is formed between them. This eliminates rework of the segments to assemble the ring, insures a quality seal is affected, and reduces the time the turbine is off-line.

  • Publication number: 20060120861
Abstract: A packing ring holder assembly for packing seal segments about a steam turbine rotor includes a nozzle box and a holder cooperable to form a dovetail for securing packing ring segments to the nozzle box. A spring is interposed between the nozzle box and packing ring segment to bias the latter radially inwardly for sealing with the rotor. The holder includes a shoulder for preventing axial movement of the spring in one direction.

  • Patent number: 6715766
Abstract: A packing segment for an annular seal ring assembly for use in a hot gas path of a turbomachine, includes a sealing face mounting a plurality of axially spaced sealing teeth; a necked-in center portion radially outward of the sealing face; and a mounting portion radially outward of the center portion. At least one steam feed hole extends angularly from a radially outermost face of the segment to a location along a side of the center portion such that, in use, at least a portion of the feed hole is exposed to hot gas in the hot gas path for flow through the feed hole to a cavity behind the segment.
