  • Patent number: 4119642
Abstract: Compounds containing the butenolide ring have a wide variety of chemical uses. The invention is an improved method of synthesizing .beta.-halobutenolides which are valuable intermediates in preparing a variety of butenolide ring containing compounds. The method comprises reacting an acetylenic alcohol with a mercuric halide to provide a vinylmercuric halide and carbonylating the vinylmercuric halide in the presence of a basic inorganic salt to provide a .beta.-halobutenolide.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 19, 1976
Date of Patent: October 10, 1978
Assignee: Iowa State University Research Foundation, Inc.
    Inventor: Richard Craig Larock
  • Patent number: 4065479
Abstract: Pi-allyl-palladium compounds are prepared by reacting a vinylmercuric salt with an olefin and a palladium (II) salt.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 30, 1976
Date of Patent: December 27, 1977
Assignee: Iowa State University Research Foundation, Inc.

  • Patent number: 4052423
Abstract: .alpha.,.beta.-Unsaturated carboxylic acids and esters have a wide variety of chemical uses. The invention is a method of synthesizing .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acids and esters which, with regard to the esters, comprises reacting a vinylmercuric halide with carbon monoxide in an alcohol to provide an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester. With regard to the acids per se, the method comprises reacting a vinylmercuric halide with carbon monoxide, in the presence of a water containing polar organic solvent to provide an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 19, 1976
Date of Patent: October 4, 1977
Assignee: Iowa State University Research Foundation, Inc.
    Inventor: Richard Craig Larock
  • Patent number: 4026957
Abstract: Vinylmercuric halide salts undergo reaction with palladium (II) dimerization promoting agents, preferably in a highly polar organic solvent at low temperatures to provide essentially quantative yields of conjugated dienes. Importantly, the reaction is stereospecific and is especially valuable for synthesis of functionally substituted dienes and symmetrical polyenes.

Date of Patent: May 31, 1977
Assignee: Iowa State University Research Foundation, Inc.
