  • Patent number: 7151468
Abstract: An on-site roadway warning system for alerting a driver of an approaching vehicle of a need to brake the vehicle. A transceiver radiates electromagnetic energy toward the approaching vehicle and receives reflected energy from the vehicle. A processor processes data about the reflected energy in relation to data about the radiated energy to yield data disclosing both range of the approaching vehicle from the transceiver and rate at which the vehicle is approaching the transceiver. The processor processes the data disclosing range of the approaching vehicle from the transceiver and rate at which the vehicle is approaching the transceiver in relation to the stored data, and activates a signaling device to signal the approaching vehicle when the data disclosing range of the approaching vehicle from the transceiver and rate at which the vehicle is approaching the transceiver correlates with stored data that identifies a potentially dangerous combination of range and rate.

  • Patent number: 7140803
Abstract: A system and process for detecting a traffic lane boundary before it is potentially violated by a moving vehicle traveling in the lane. Passive RF tags or labels are embedded in a paint stripe running along pavement. A sensor in the vehicle emits an RF signal at a frequency to which the tags or labels are responsive. When the emitted signal is incident on a tag or label with strength indicative of straying of the vehicle from the lane toward incipient violation of the lane boundary defined by the stripe, the tag or label issues a return signal that is received by the sensor for on-board signaling of the potential violation to alter the driver so that corrective action can be taken.

  • Publication number: 20050282770
Abstract: A new class of synthetic glycosulfopeptides (GSPs) which have one or more sulfated tyrosine residues and a glycan linked to the peptide, the glycan preferably including a sialyl Lewisx group or a sialyl Lewisa group. In a preferred version the GSPs have an O-glycan comprising a ?1,6 linkage to a GalNAc. The present invention further contemplates in vitro methods of the synthesis of these GSPs without the use of the cells and methods of their use in vivo as powerful anti-inflammatory antithrombotic, or anti-metastatic compounds. The invention also contemplates a method of synthesizing oligosaccharides by cleaving the glycan from the GSP.

  • Publication number: 20050245737
Abstract: The present invention contemplates an apparatus and method for isolating glycoconjugates from mixtures or contaminated mixtures thereof. In the present invention, a bed or other support element comprising a mixture of immobilized lectins is provided. The mixture of glycoconjugates is passed over the mixed lectin bed wherein glycoconjugates which correspond to the lectins in the bed are bound thereto while non-glycoconjugates flow away. Thus, the method can be used to isolate glycoproteins from mixtures of glycoproteins and non-glycosylated proteins, glycopeptides from mixtures of glycopeptides and non-glycosylated peptides, glycolipids from non-glycosylated lipids, and free oligosaccharides from extracts or preparations. This invention solves the problem of isolating glycoconjugates from complex mixtures of glycoconjugates with non-gyconconjugates. For example, in most cells, a large fraction of the total macromolecules are not glycosylated.

  • Publication number: 20050037477
Abstract: Core 1 ?3-galactosyl transferase specific molecular chaperones (Cosmc-1) and nucleic acids encoding the core 1 ?3-galactosyl transferase specific molecular chaperones or proteins having core 1 ?3-galactosyl transferase specific molecular chaperone activity are described. The polynucleotides encoding Cosmc-1 can be used to transform or transfect host cells for producing substantially pure forms of active forms of core 1 ?3-galactosyl transferase and/or for use in an expression system for post-translational core 1 glycosylation of proteins or peptides produced within the expression system, for example, glycosylation via a ?3-linkage, of an N-acetylgalactosamine linked to a serine, threonine or other linking amino acid on peptides or proteins requiring O-, N-, or S-linked glycosylation.

  • Patent number: 6454325
Abstract: The present invention provides a closure handle lever comprising a gripping portion rotatably mounted along an axis and a catch lever rotatably mounted along this same axis. The catch lever is rotatable about the axis from a first position to a second position independent of the gripping portion. The first position provides a greater mechanical advantage for the gripping portion than the second position. The gripping portion is engaged to the catch lever such that rotation of the gripping portion about the axis causes rotation of the catch lever about this same axis.

  • Patent number: 5860530
Abstract: A disposable food container comprises a lid and a base optionally connected to each other along a resilient hinge. The lid includes a top wall, a continuous lid side wall, and a plurality of lid corners. The lid side wall encompasses the top wall and extends downwardly and outwardly from the top wall. The plurality of lid corners are at least partially formed by the lid side wall and include a pair of front lid corners. The base includes a bottom wall, a continuous base side wall, and a plurality of base corners. The base side wall encompasses the bottom wall and extends upwardly and outwardly from the bottom wall. The plurality of base corners are at least partially formed by the base side wall and include a pair of front base corners. If the container is provided with a resilient hinge, the pair of front lid corners and the pair of front base corners are spaced away from the hinge. The container includes a corner latch closure for releasably engaging the lid and the base in a closed position.

  • Patent number: 5381833
Abstract: This invention is a pipe support for a pipe covered by a cylindrical bat of insulation. The insulated pipe is suspended by a pipe hanger having a clevis extending round and beneath the pipe. The pipe support comprises an upwardly concave saddle engageable with the underside of the pipe within the insulation. A pipe support base is secured to the clevis and comprises a bracket fixedly secured to the clevis by a lock bolt; alternatively, a portion of the clevis may serve as the pipe support base. Top and bottom ends of a vertical connector are secured respectively to the saddle and to the support base. A vertical connector extends through the insulation at the bottom of the pipe. The ends of the connector are fixedly secured respectively to the saddle and to the support base. In one embodiment, the connector is a single shaft or rod. In another embodiment, the connector is a rod removably telescopically assembled within a hollow sleeve.
