Patent number: 11617839Abstract: A self-retracting syringe has an injection assembly and a retraction assembly. The injection assembly has a housing, a spring rest, and a spring that is restrained initially in compression between the housing and the spring rest. A plunger rod is disposed inside the coil of the spring. A coupler in contact with the spring rest and the plunger rod releasably couples the plunger rod to the spring rest. When a latch is released, the plunger rod moves distally to urge a seal forward, which seal movement causes a hypodermic needle to extend and a medicament to be expelled through the hypodermic needle. A retraction assembly returns the hypodermic needle into the syringe body after the medicament is expelled. Embodiments of retraction assembly provide an inlet through which fluid may be introduced into the syringe through said hypodermic needle. Methods for filling the syringe are also described.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2022Date of Patent: April 4, 2023Assignee: Nspire Medical Technologies, LLCInventor: Richard David Gillespie, III

Patent number: 11583473Abstract: An injection apparatus and related methods. The injection apparatus includes a housing with a proximate end and a distal end. The housing further defines a fluid pathway. A defeatable seal is fixedly positioned within the fluid pathway to separate an internal volume of the housing into a first compartment and a second compartment downstream from the first compartment. The defeatable seal is configured to fail in response to an increase in fluid pressure within the first compartment, allowing a fluid in the first compartment to pass through the second compartment and through the fluid outlet.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2021Date of Patent: February 21, 2023Assignee: Nspire Medical Technologies, LLCInventor: Richard David Gillespie, III

Patent number: 9259536Abstract: An automatic injection syringe assembly having an integrated and fillable medicine container that includes a medicine container within a housing and a conduit assembly. The medicine container includes a piston having an aperture at a distal end thereof for the passage of fluid therethrough. The conduit assembly includes a conduit member that is releasably connected to the housing and has an open proximal end and an open distal end. The open distal end of the conduit member is releasably engaged with the piston and in fluid communication with the piston aperture. The open proximal end and the open distal end of the conduit member are m fluid communication via a conduit within the conduit member.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2011Date of Patent: February 16, 2016Assignee: West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc.Inventors: Richard David Gillespie, III, Doug Owen Crow

Publication number: 20140107577Abstract: A needle-protection device (2) for a syringe (1) includes a protector support (120) having at least one recess (126A) that extends therethrough and at least one rib (170) that extends across at least a portion of the recess. The rib is generally centrally positioned within the recess. A needle protector (22) has an inner diameter that is at least slightly greater than an outer diameter of the protector support, such that at least a portion of the protector support can be inserted within at least a portion of the needle protector. At least one hook (56) extends radially inwardly from the needle protector. The needle protector is rotatable with respect to the protector support such that the at least one hook snaps over the at least one rib and locks the rotational position of the protector support with respect to the needle protector.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 24, 2012Publication date: April 17, 2014Applicant: West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc.Inventors: Robert R. Patent number: 8048029Abstract: The present invention provides an injector apparatus suitable for use with an automatic injection device. The injector apparatus includes a cylindrical housing having a deflectable member and a removable guard. The deflectable member releasably holds a syringe tube assembly in the axial direction when the apparatus is in the initial position. Then, after use, the deflectable member provides a tamper evidence means for indicating whether or not the injector apparatus was previously used or tampered with.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2010Date of Patent: November 1, 2011Assignee: West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc.Inventors: Richard David Gillespie, III, Doug Owen Crow

Patent number: 7758548Abstract: A coupling for selectively securing a spring to a plunger is provided. The coupling has a first end defining a spring rest for receiving the spring and a second end defining a shoulder. The shoulder is moveable to a first position into contact with the plunger and to a second position out of contact with the plunger. The shoulder is normally in the second position and is resiliently moveable to the first position.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2005Date of Patent: July 20, 2010Assignee: West Pharmaceutical Services of Delaware, Inc.Inventors: Richard David Gillespie, Doug Owen Crow

Patent number: 7674246Abstract: An automatic injection and retraction syringe having a medicine cartridge, an injection assembly, and a retraction assembly is provided. The retraction assembly is selectively securable to the injection assembly to house the medicine cartridge. The retraction assembly includes an end cap, a hypodermic needle, a retraction spring, and an upper seal. The retraction spring is maintained in a partially compressed condition between the needle hub and the end cap. The upper seal is urged against a sealing surface by the retraction spring in the partially compressed condition to form a hermetic seal. In some embodiments, the injection assembly includes an injection spring, a plunger engaged to the injection spring, and a safety element to prevent the plunger from escaping the injection assembly if the injection spring is released from the normally stressed condition before the assemblies are secured to one another.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2005Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: West Pharmaceutical Services of Delaware, Inc.Inventors: Richard David Gillespie, Doug Owen Crow
