Patent number: 8164241Abstract: An extension-type spark plug includes an upper terminal stud and a lower terminal stud axially spaced from one another in electrical communication with one another. An upper tubular insulator having a through cavity surrounds at least a portion of the upper terminal stud. A lower insulator constructed of a separate piece of material from the upper insulator has a through cavity surrounding at least a portion of the lower terminal stud. A spring member is disposed between the upper terminal stud and the lower terminal stud and biases the upper terminal stud and the lower member away from one another. The spark plug assembly (10) includes a fairly traditional spark plug component (28) to which an elongated tubular conduit (12) is attached, such as by welding, to a portion of the metallic shell (32). The conduit (12) contains an upper ceramic insulator (52) adjacent its top end (14) disposed in end-to-end abutting contact with an outer elastomeric insulator (58). The ceramic insulator of the spark plug component (28), herein referred to as a lower ceramic insulator (30), is surrounded by the outer elastomeric insulator (58) and held securely within the conduit (12) thereby. The center electrode is in communication with an energy source. The insulator surrounds the center electrode. The one-piece shell surrounds and contacts the insulator for securing the insulator within the shell, wherein the shell has a plurality of threads near a first end and a ground electrode attached to the shell and aligned with a tip of the center electrode at a second end to define a spark gap. Further, a seat is formed in the shell between the plurality of threads and the ground electrode for sealing the shell against the engine. Patent number: 4032842Abstract: An improved high voltage pulse power supply for a spark plug test fixture. AC line voltage is applied through a voltage step-down transformer, a half wave rectifier and an electronic switch to the primary winding of a conventional ignition coil. During the rise time of positive half cycles, the rectified voltage is applied through the electronic switch to the ignition coil primary. As the positive half cycle begins to fall towards the zero crossover, the electronic switch is opened. The magnetic field collapse in the ignition coil produces a high voltage negative pulse which is applied to a spark plug under test.
