  • Patent number: 4533247
Abstract: An optical transmission system comprises a light source, which may be coherent or incoherent, a first optical interferometer wherein light from the source is modulated, an optical path, which may be either free space or an optical fiber, along which the modulated output of the first interferometer is propagated, a second interferometer wherein light received from the optical path is demodulated, and a photodetector to which the demodulated output is applied. Typically the first interferometers is a Fabry-Perot etalon, the length of the resonant cavity of which can be altered to modulate light applied thereto.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 23, 1982
Date of Patent: August 6, 1985
    Assignee: International Standard Electric Corporation
    Inventor: Richard E. Epworth
  • Patent number: 4238648
Abstract: A connector arrangement for optical fibers which includes programmable means for presetting an equalizer in a repeater connected to the fiber or adjusting the laser or LED power levels in a transmitter connected to the fiber. The equalizer coefficients (or the output power) depend on the fiber characteristics which remain constant at all times. Therefore, it is possible to preset the coefficents (or power) when replacing a repeater or a transmitter.

Date of Patent: December 9, 1980
    Assignee: International Standard Electric Corporation
    Inventor: Richard E. Epworth
  • Patent number: 4149771
Abstract: A spiral spring strip for coupling a pair of optical fibers which may be terminated with ferrules. The spring loop diameter is reduced by tension so as to grip the ferrules. Several spirals may be employed to form a multiway connector.

Inventors: Richard E. Epworth, John S. Leach
  • Patent number: 4144504
Abstract: An injection laser mount assembly comprises a housing having a front surface extending in a plane parallel with a rear surface. The front surface has a central recess from which a pillar extends for carrying a laser. Optical coupling can be made with the laser by converting the mount assembly to an optical fiber termination.
