Patent number: 5881725Abstract: A pneumatic oxygen conserver used with a single-tube cannula. The conserver includes a body having first and second cavities. A main diaphragm divides the first cavity into first and second chambers. An inlet passage delivers oxygen from a supply to the first chamber, and an outlet passage delivers oxygen from the first chamber to the cannula. The main diaphragm is movable between a closed position preventing oxygen flow through the outlet passage and an open position permitting flow. A first flow control passage connects the inlet passage and the second chamber, and a first flow control orifice in the passage restricts flow. A sensing diaphragm divides the second cavity into third and fourth chambers. A second flow control passage connects the second and third chambers, and a second flow control orifice in the passage restricts flow. The sensing diaphragm is movable between a closed position preventing flow through the second passage and an open position permitting such flow.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1997Date of Patent: March 16, 1999Assignee: Victor Equipment CompanyInventors: Richard E. Patent number: 5268223Abstract: Composites comprising structural fiber and matrix resin formulated from epoxys selected from the group consisting of polyglycidyl ethers of polycyclic bridged hydroxy-substituted polyaromatic compounds and N,N,N',N'-tetraglycidyl-bis(4-amino- 3-ethylphenyl)methane with from about 6 to about 150 pbw, per hundred parts by weight of the epoxy resin components, of a solid aromatic diamine hardener, toughened with porous rigid resin particles having a spheroidal spongy structure. The resulting composites exhibit surprising improvement in interlaminar strength characteristics as measured by G.sub.IC.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1991Date of Patent: December 7, 1993Assignee: Amoco CorporationInventors: Shahid P. Qureshi, Richard E. Hoffman, Richard H. Newman-Evans

Patent number: 5169710Abstract: Layered, fiber-reinforced composites toughened by the use of thermosetting matrix resins including rigid particles are improved in toughness when the particles are porous and have a spheroidal spongy structure, are formed of a polyamide. The method of the invention is particularly effective in improving the toughness of composites based on thermoset matrix resins, and particularly epoxy resins.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1991Date of Patent: December 8, 1992Assignee: Amoco CorporationInventors: Shahid P. Qureshi, Richard E. Hoffman, Richard H. Newman-Evans

Patent number: 5057822Abstract: A medical gas alarm system is provided which includes a sensor unit pneumatically connected to a medical gas supply line and a switch connected to a valve in the supply line for detecting the open condition of the valve. In the event either the sensor detects a high pressure or low pressure condition in the supply line or the switch is activated by closing of the valve, an alarm signal is received by an alarm module and an alarm is activated. The alarm may be visual, audible or both. During normal operations, the alarm module displays both a system on condition and a digital display indicating the pressure in the supply line.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1990Date of Patent: October 15, 1991Assignee: Puritan-Bennett CorporationInventor: Richard E. Patent number: 5020563Abstract: A connector set adapted for releasably connecting a gas conduit from a gas appliance or the like to a gas line to provide gas to the appliance. The connector set comprises a nipple adapted to be connected to the gas conduit and a receptacle adapted to be connected to the gas line. The receptacle has a socket adapted to receive the nipple, and first and second valves. The valves are each operable between an open position and a closed position and arranged so that gas can pass from the gas line to the socket only when both valves are in their open positions. The receptacle further includes a mechanism for operating the second valve as the first valve is operated so that the second valve opens when the first valve opens and closes when the first valve closes. The first valve is operable only when the nipple is in the socket, and the nipple is removable from the socket only when the first valve is in its closed position.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1990Date of Patent: June 4, 1991Assignee: Gas Research InstituteInventors: Richard E. Hoffman, Richard Topping, Tom W. Nelson, Marie L. Murville, Paul Belkus

Patent number: 4727903Abstract: An excess pressure and/or excess flow/temperature shutoff valve comprising a valve housing having an axial bore therethrough with inlet and outlet ends, a portion of the bore being enlarged to form a valve chamber, and a spool movable in the valve chamber and having a sealing fit with the walls of the chamber. In the event of an upstream pressure increase of predetermined magnitude, the spool is adapted to move from an open position in which it permits flow of fluid through the bore to a position wherein additional spool area is exposed to the upstream fluid pressure, whereupon the spool is adapted to move further downstream to a shut off position for blocking the flow of fluid through the bore. The valve may be optionally equipped to shut off the flow of fluid in the event of a downstream pressure decrease as a result of excess leakage and/or an increase in fluid temperature in excess of a predetermined value.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1987Date of Patent: March 1, 1988Assignee: Malcolm B. SturgisInventors: Malcolm B. Sturgis, Richard E. Hoffman

Patent number: 4255302Abstract: An epoxy resin system for use in the wet winding of high strength filament wound pressure vessels with aramide fiber. The resin system is composed of a mixture of a plurality of distinct epoxy resins and aromatic curing agents. The epoxy resins were selected to impart particular properties required for the filament winding process and to improve the strength of filament wound pressure vessels. Aromatic amine curing agents were selected to alter the time/temperature gel and cure conditions of the system without significantly altering the final strength of the pressure vessels. The resin system is nominally composed of a mixture of a commercially available epoxy resins comprising diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, a diglycidyl ester of linoleic dimer acid, and a diglycidyl ether of butanediol and the aromatic amine curing agent comprises a mixture of methylenedianiline and metaphenylenediamine in a 60/40 ratio by weight.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1979Date of Patent: March 10, 1981Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Leo G. Adams, Richard E. Hoffman
