Patent number: 6622995Abstract: A hydraulic mount for automotive engine and powertrain applications includes an elastomer body, a base and a partition interposed the body and the base to form a fluid-pumping chamber and a reservoir. Circumferentially spaced axial extending holes or slots or an annular orifice track are formed in the partition together with a magnetic coil operable to impose a magnetic field on the holes, slots or orifice track to control the shear properties of a magnetorheological (MR) fluid in the pumping chamber and reservoir. An elastomeric decoupler member is in communication with at least one of the pumping chamber and the reservoir to reduce the mount dynamic stiffness for isolating low-displacement relatively high-frequency vibrations. Vibrations of multiple frequencies may be isolated by tuning the mount with a controller.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2001Date of Patent: September 23, 2003Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Thomas A. Patent number: 5263694Abstract: An upper mount assembly includes a pair of plates seating at least one Belleville spring. The plates are concentrically mounted about a hydraulic damper so that the Belleville spring is in series with a coil suspension spring. During use, deflection of the Belleville spring provides an additional degree of motion to reduce transmission of vibration to the vehicular body.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1992Date of Patent: November 23, 1993Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Stanley E. Smith, Richard E. Longhouse, Wendell Collins, Jr., Eric L. Jensen

Patent number: 5150886Abstract: A top mount assembly includes a resilient isolator designed to be seated on an upper end of an actuator. A guiding sleeve is seated on the isolator and includes an upstanding annular wall forming a cavity in an upper surface of the guiding sleeve. At least one Belleville spring is mounted in the cavity to permit deflection of the assembly during the operational range of the actuator. A thrust plate is mounted on the Belleville spring and attached to the body.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 1991Date of Patent: September 29, 1992Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: James P. Hamberg, Todd H. Baldini, Stanley E. Smith, Wendell Collins, Jr., Richard E. Longhouse

Patent number: 5070970Abstract: A hydraulic damper for a suspension system comprises a fluid-filled inner cylinder mounting a reciprocating piston and piston rod. The piston divides the interior of the inner cylinder into upper and lower chambers. A reservoir tube surrounds the inner cylinder and forms a reservoir in the interior volume between the reservoir tube and the inner cylinder. A base valve assembly permits the return of fluid into the lower chamber from the reservoir. A pair of concentric tubes are mounted between the inner cylinder and the reservoir tube and provide a one-way laminar flow path for fluid exiting the upper chamber of the inner cylinder and entering the reservoir. The length and the spacing of the concentric tubes can be varied to provide a preselected damping force.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1990Date of Patent: December 10, 1991Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Gary L. Johnston, William C. Kruckemeyer, Richard E. Longhouse

Patent number: 4692098Abstract: Airfoil for vehicle fan which operates in low Reynolds number and varying turbulent conditions having a discontinuity formed on the suction surface thereof adjacent to its leading edge to trigger early formation of a laminar flow bubble so that sufficient suction surface remains downstream of the air bubble whereby air circumventing the bubble can reattach to the suction surface for sufficient pressure recovery for high lift and low drag performance.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1985Date of Patent: September 8, 1987Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Elias H. Razinsky, William B. Roberts, Richard E. Longhouse

Patent number: 4433263Abstract: A commutator has a plurality of spaced, electrically conducting segments, each of which has a physical dimension determining the relative time duration of brush contact with said segment during commutator rotation with audible brush noise being generated between the brush and said consecutive segments, the noise including a fundamental frequency component at a frequency related to the frequency at which the consecutive segments pass the brush. The physical dimension of the consecutive segments varies from each segment to the next according to a predetermined pattern effective to vary the relative time of brush contact from each segment to the next during rotation and thus reduce the amplitude of the fundamental frequency components to make the brush noise less tonal in character and thus less annoying.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1982Date of Patent: February 21, 1984Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Richard E. Longhouse, William D. Cornwell, Jr., Harry C. Buchanan, Jr.

Patent number: 4329946Abstract: A bladed fan has an inlet shroud formed with a bell-mouthed inlet section which extends to an annular skirt portion affixed to the tips of the blades of the fan. The fan and the shroud are immersed within a shroud fixed to an engine cooling radiator. This fixed shroud has an ejector section that extends to or beyond the rotating shroud and fan blading. The bell-mouthed inlet section has sufficient arc to prevent separation so that the fan operates at high efficiency and discharges air outwardly therefrom including the blockage of the clearance between the two shrouds to thereby effectively reduce air recirculation.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1980Date of Patent: May 18, 1982Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Richard E. Longhouse

Patent number: 4213426Abstract: Engine cooling fan shrouding comprising a flexible shroud mounted on a stationary component within the engine compartment and a rotating shroud carried by the blade tips of an engine mounted cooling fan. With this arrangement, there is small clearance between the rotating shroud and the flexible shroud so that most of the air drawn in by the fan is through the radiator core for effective cooling of liquids circulated therein. The flexible shroud deflects without damage on engine vibration causing the rotating shroud to contact the flexible shroud.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1978Date of Patent: July 22, 1980Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Richard E. Patent number: 4181172Abstract: The mechanism shown and described herein is a cooling fan and associated dual shroud arrangement including (1) a rotating shroud comprised of a ring secured to the outer tips of the fan blades and a bell-mouthed inlet formed on the leading edge of the ring, and (2) a stationary shroud secured at one end or edge thereof to the radiator and terminating at the outer end thereof in an annular edge in front or upstream of the bell-mouthed inlet. A predetermined clearance is defined between the stationary shroud and the bell-mouthed inlet, effective to provide a smooth recirculating airflow around the rotating shroud and back into the main airflow stream, thereby substantially eliminating tip-vortex characteristics and resultant tip-clearance noise, and without unsteady flow interactions that cause rotational noise. In one alternate embodiment, the radiator is used in lieu of the stationary shroud for cooperation with the bell-mouthed inlet.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1977Date of Patent: January 1, 1980Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Richard E. Longhouse
