    Abstract: Optically transparent composite materials in which solid solution inorganic nanoparticles are dispersed in a host matrix inert thereto, wherein the nanoparticles are doped with one or more active ions at a level up to about 60 mole % and consist of particles having a dispersed particle size between about 1 and about 100 nm, and the composite material with the nanoparticles dispersed therein is optically transparent to wavelengths at which excitation, fluorescence or luminescence of the active ions occur. Luminescent devices incorporating the composite materials are also disclosed.

    Abstract: The formation of passivation coatings on ferrous substrates is disclosed by heating the substrate in an aqueous 1.0 to 6.0 M basic metal hydroxide treatment bath containing SiO2 and a water-soluble glycol, at a temperature that is effective to form a passivation coating on the substrate until the passivation coating is formed thereon, wherein the treatment bath contains from about 0.25 to about 1.0 moles of SiO2 per liter of glycol and water. Acmite passivation coatings formed by this method are also disclosed.

    Abstract: Hydrofluoric acid-resistant ceramic mortar compositions containing a hydrofluoric acid-resistant grog having a particle size distribution imparting a high particle packing fraction to the mortar composition and a binding phase containing a metal salt having a particle size distribution imparting plasticity to the mortar composition selected from hydrofluoric acid-insoluble fluoride salts, metal salts capable of forming hydrofluoric acid-insoluble fluoride salts upon reaction with a fluorinating reagent and mixtures thereof. Methods for forming hydrofluoric acid-resistant ceramic mortar compositions from non-fluoride metal salts are also disclosed as well as methods for bonding refractory bricks into a brickwork unit with the ceramic mortars of the invention. Brickwork units prepared using the ceramic mortar compositions of the invention by the methods of the invention are also described.

A vessel rotates around a central axis for producing the rotational motion. The vessel is rocked in a direction substantially perpendicular to the central axis for producing rocking motion. Mixing is enhanced when the rocking frequency is different than the rotational frequency.

    Abstract: A method for controlling chemical distribution of substances in a solid state (and products produced thereby), the method comprising the steps of mixing particles of a first powder and a triggerable granule facilitator to form first microcapsules, the first microcapsules each having a core of one of the particles and a cladding of the facilitator; and triggering the facilitator while dry mixing the microcapsules to form substantially spherical granules of the microcapsules, the granules each having a controlled chemical distribution.The method also includes the steps of mixing particles of a second powder with the facilitator to form second microcapsules, the second microcapsules each having a core of one of the particles of the second powder and a cladding of the facilitator; and then mixing the first and the second microcapsules prior to said triggering step.

    Abstract: Phase stable lead monoxide powders are disclosed in which substantially pure free flowing PbO having a crystal phase which is homogeneous, and which phase may be selected from either the litharge or massicot forms, retains such phase homogeneity over extended periods under ambient storage conditions or even under the influence of ultraviolet light. Furthermore, lead monoxide powders and their oxalate precursors whose particles have a plate-like morphology and size which make them ideal for numerous applications are described. These and other compositions, as well as methods for making and utilizing these novel preparations, are included.
