  • Patent number: 6164640
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for receiving at least one sheet from a first upstream direction and feeding the at least one sheet in either a second mainstream direction or a third disposal direction. Conventionally, this invention may be used to reorient a sheet, or an accumulation of sheets, from landscape to portrait or vice versa, and to dispose of an incorrect accumulation of sheets into an out-sort station.

  • Patent number: 5888047
Abstract: A separating and feeding machine is disclosed for removing a succession of bound booklets or the like from a supply hopper adapted to hold a stack of the booklets for feeding them to a subsequent apparatus for further processing. The separating and feeding machine includes a reciprocating vacuum feed plate disposed in the bottom of the hopper for advancing the bottom booklet through a discharge opening to a take away feed mechanism, and includes first and second stage separating mechanism which initially maintains at least the bottom two booklets in the hopper in shingled relationship to expose a marginal portion thereof adjacent the bound edge so that a pressing member can maintain a normal force on the exposed marginal portion of the bottom booklet to prevent it from wrinkling and becoming jammed in the discharge opening while the vacuum feed plate is moving it toward the discharge opening.

  • Patent number: 5833232
Abstract: An apparatus for accumulating sheets from a secondary source and changing their conveyance direction 90.degree.. The accumulator is a group of vertically stacked bins that discharge batchwise and are loaded from the secondary source alternately by way of a diverter. Discharge is synchronous with a directionally constant primary sheet source.

  • Patent number: 5734566
Abstract: A method and apparatus for keeping a matched document inserter system in synchronization. The method and apparatus are directed to controlling the inserter system which includes an input section for producing a sequence of collations, a transport for feeding the sequence of collations in a path of travel and a chassis section downstream from the input section capable of combining each collation in the sequence of collations with a respective corresponding specific enclosure. The method comprises the step(s) of: (a) recognizing when a collation in the sequence of collations has been removed from the inserter system, and (b) after the removed collation has been eliminated from the sequence of collations, maintaining proper spacing in the sequence of collations so that each collation in the sequence of collations is correctly assembled to the respective corresponding specific enclosure.

  • Patent number: 5685531
Abstract: A method of collating unfolded sheets of paper into a collation and combining the collation with a folded sheet of paper. The method comprises: feeding a plurality of unfolded sheets of paper seriatim along a feed path from an upstream position to a downstream position; conveying the unfolded sheets seriatim around a drum to cause the unfolded sheets to be conveyed to an upstream position; stopping the unfolded sheets seriatim in a pocket having a back panel and a top panel, the back panel stopping the unfolded sheets from being conveyed further upstream and forming a collation of the unfolded sheets; feeding a folded document having a leading folded edge from an upstream to a downstream position across the top panel on top of the collation of unfolded sheets, thereby forming a single stack of documents; and conveying the single stack of documents to a downstream location.

  • Patent number: 5641158
Abstract: Apparatus and method for receiving a sheet from a first direction and transporting the sheet in a second direction. The apparatus comprising: a device for feeding the sheet in the second direction; a deck having an imput end for receiving the sheet from the first direction and an output end and including a lower deck plate and an upper deck plate pivotally mounted and vertically spaced above the lower deck plate. The apparatus further comprising a controller and a device for pivoting the upper deck plate between a closed position and an open position. The controller for causing the pivoting device to rotate the upper deck plate to the open position to receive the sheet from the first direction, causing the pivoting device to rotate the upper deck plate to the closed position after receiving the sheet and thereafter causing the feed device to feed the sheet in the second direction through the deck output end.

  • Patent number: 5435534
Abstract: A method of folding and accumulating a plurality of paper sheets. The method comprises: feeding a plurality of paper sheets seriatim into a first accumulator to form a first sub-set of paper sheets; feeding a plurality of paper sheets sedatim into a second accumulator to form a second sub-set of paper sheets; feeding the second sub-set of sheets through a folding device to form a folded second sub-set of sheets; depositing the folded second sub-set of sheets onto an accumulating deck; feeding the first sub-set of sheets through the folding device to form a folded first sub-set of sheets; and depositing the folded first subset of sheets on top of the second sub-set of sheets on the accumulating deck, to thereby form a final, folded collation consisting of the two folded sub-sets.

  • Patent number: 5318285
Abstract: An improvement for an apparatus conveying sheets of paper seriatim along a deck between a plurality of roller pairs, including lower driven rollers and corresponding upper biased idler rollers. The improvement comprises a roller and guide plate assembly pivotably mounted on the deck. The roller and guide plate assembly includes a guide plate operatively coupled to rigid support shafts and upper roller assemblies of the roller pairs, and means for supporting the guide plate a fixed distance above the deck. The guide plate is mounted to at least two shaft support blocks, the rigid support shafts for the upper roller assemblies being mounted to the support blocks above the guide plate, the guide plate including slots through which the biased upper rollers of the upper roller assemblies extend therethrough to cooperate with the corresponding lower driven rollers to convey sheets across the deck.
