  • Publication number: 20080174990
Abstract: An optical system includes an energy source and a reflector partially surrounding the energy source to reflect energy produced by the energy source. Preferably, the reflector is formed by segments of second order surfaces or segments approximating second order surfaces. The segments are each sized and shaped to provide a predetermined amount of energy in a predetermined energy pattern on a target surface. Additionally, the reflector is preferably a flexible reflector that can be selectively deformed from a first shape to a second shape to provide different first and second predetermined energy patterns.

  • Patent number: 6010233
Abstract: An interchangeable headlamp reflector and light bulb unit is provided which can be used as part of various automotive headlamp assemblies. The surface of the reflector is defined mathematically by considering the optical path differences between a ray of light from a light source and a ray of light from a vertical cylindrical axis. The reflector is made of a low number of individual segments that each define a certain portion of the resulting beam of light. Each segment has light rays that extend parallel to the ground and diverge horizontally, thus minimizing possible hot spots on the lens of the reflector assembly.

  • Patent number: 5096281
Abstract: Method and apparatus for generating compound shapes in optical surfaces needed to accomodate variable magnification, off-axis projection, reflection from diverse surfaces, reflector relay, intensity pattern requirements and other complex optical transform functions. The present invention permits the realization of mirrors of which provide a variable magnification. The surface generation capabilities permit controlled magnification changes that nevertheless are still image forming and typically avoid the human eye focussing difficulties normally associated with variable magnification mirrors. The present invention includes a computer driven, reflector design system which permits the designer to see the field of view, ray tracings, reflected beam intensity pattern and other data pertinent to a variable magnification mirror from entered mirror specifications. The effect of changes in specifications can be rapidly determined and a final design achieved through one or more such reiterations.
