Patent number: 5750231Abstract: A significantly thinner boron carbide overcoat layer is provided for a magnetic disk which has the same durability as thicker prior art overcoat layers for protecting an underlying magnetic layer. By employing adhesion layers selected from the group consisting of Ge, Ru, WTiSi, WTi, Si, and Y between the magnetic layer and the overcoat layer, the durability of the overcoat layer is significantly increased over a single overcoat layer of B4C. Certain process steps in the making of the B4C overcoat layer still further enhance the durability of the B4C overcoat layer by maintaining the disk or substrate specimen at a floating potential in a plasma chamber and employing low levels of argon pressure and sputtering wattage.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1996Date of Patent: May 12, 1998Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Richard Henry Ahlert, James Kent Howard, Muhammad Inayet Ullah, Richard Donald Umphress

Patent number: 5679325Abstract: The composition of the present invention combines the local anaesthetic lidocaine in free base form and the non-CFC aerosol propellant HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane; CF.sub.3 CH.sub.2 F) or HFC-227 (1,1,1,2,3,3,3-Heptafluoropropane; (CF.sub.3 CHFCF.sub.3), or a combination thereof, thus incorporating previously-unattainable amounts of the lidocaine free base in solution in a non-CFC aerosol propellant. This particular form of relatively-concentrated cosolvent-free anaesthetic permits improved inhalation delivery to the airway and lung, and topical airway local anaesthesia is thus readily provided. A method in accordance with the invention provides for release of the anaesthetic in aerosolized form of selected dosage from a canister containing the pressurized local anaesthetic composition into a patient's respiratory system directly or by way of an airway.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1996Date of Patent: October 21, 1997Inventor: Richard A. Patent number: 5676173Abstract: An apparatus for inserting a venturi tube having an inlet, an aspirator inlet and an outlet directly within a fluid flow stream, with the aspirator inlet not in contact with the fluid flow stream is disclosed. A plate having a first aperture leading to the venturi inlet, and a series of second apertures both supports the venturi within a conduit and divides the fluid flow stream into a first stream which flows through the venturi tube and a second stream which flows around the venturi tube. A variety of adjusting mechanisms are disclosed for varying the cross sectional area of the second apertures relative to the cross sectional area of the venturi tube. The apparatus is adapted to allow the back pressure within the venturi tube (which increases as the fluid flow rate increases) to force an increasing proportion of the flow stream to flow around the venturi tube in order to maintain a relatively constant aspiration rate within the venturi tube.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1995Date of Patent: October 14, 1997Assignee: T I Properties, Inc.Inventors: Wayne Ernest Conrad, Helmut Gerhard Conrad, Richard Stanley Phillips, Andrew Richard Henry Phillips, Gerald Earl Bowman, Michael John Preston

Patent number: 5672678Abstract: A semiconductive conjugated copolymer comprises at least two chemically different monomer units which, when existing in their individual homopolymer forms, have different semiconductor bandgaps. The proportion of said at least two chemically different monomer units in the copolymer is selected to control the semiconductor bandgap of the copolymer so as to control the optical properties of the copolymer. The copolymer is formed in a manner enabling it to be laid down as a film without substantially affecting the luminescent characteristics of the copolymer and is stable at operational temperature. The semiconductor bandgap may be spatially modulated so as to increase the quantum efficiency of the copolymer when excited to luminesce, to select the wavelength of radiation omitted during luminescence or to select the refractive index of the copolymer.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1995Date of Patent: September 30, 1997Assignee: Cambridge Display Technology LimitedInventors: Andrew Holmes, Donal Donat Bradley, Richard Henry Friend, Arno Kraft, Paul Burn, Adam Brown

Patent number: 5667643Abstract: A heat exchanger is provided which is suitable for use as a condenser/reboiler in a double distillation column. The heat exchanger has alternating first and second passages and a reservoir located above the first and second passages for receiving a first fluid and for containing a froth. A series of orifices can be provided by a distributor tray to provide flow communication between the reservoir and the first passages to allow at least a liquid phase of the froth to weep into the first passages and to be partly vaporized through indirect heat exchange with a second fluid flowing through the second passages. The partial vaporization produces a vapor phase of the froth which can at least in part escape from the orifices and interact with the first fluid to thereby form the froth. A remaining part of the liquid phase, not vaporized through the indirect heat exchange, is discharged from the bottom of the first passages into a sump.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1995Date of Patent: September 16, 1997Assignee: The BOC Group, Inc.Inventors: Donald Prentice Satchell, Jr., Venkat Natarajan, Richard Henry Clarke

Patent number: 5661807Abstract: A system for authenticating a user located at a requesting node to a resource such as a host application located at an authenticating node using one-time passwords that change pseudorandomly with each request for authentication. At the requesting node a non-time-dependent value is generated from nonsecret information identifying the user and the host application, using a secret encryption key shared with the authenticating node. The non-time-dependent value is combined with a time-dependent value to generate a composite value that is encrypted to produce an authentication parameter. The authentication parameter is reversibly transformed into an alphanumeric character string that is transmitted as a one-time password to the authenticating node. At the authenticating node the received password is transformed back into the corresponding authentication parameter, which is decrypted to regenerate the composite value.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1995Date of Patent: August 26, 1997Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Richard Henry Guski, Raymond Craig Larson, Stephen Michael Matyas, Jr., Donald Byron Johnson, Don Coppersmith
