Patent number: 7172067Abstract: A level case includes a tubular body having a series of walls that define an internal cavity, and a cap that selectively closes the internal cavity. A series of indentations are formed in the walls, and are configured to receive and engage the corners of a level received within the internal cavity. The internal cavity defines spaces between the level surfaces and the facing surfaces of the walls, to protect the level surfaces in the event the walls of the tubular body are subjected to forces that cause inward deformation of the walls. The cap is configured similarly to the tubular body, including indentations that receive the corners of the level. The cap is engaged over the opening of the tubular body so as to enclose a portion of the level that extends outwardly of the tubular body. The indentations in the tubular body are continuous throughout a majority of the length of the tubular body.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2003Date of Patent: February 6, 2007Assignee: Johnson Level & Tool Mfg. Co., Inc.Inventors: Richard J. Gruetzmacher, Michael L. Grinnall, Duane D. Franzen, Jr.

Patent number: 7070049Abstract: A suspension-type packaging arrangement for a product includes an upper engagement section having an opening to receive a hook or the like, a lower product support section, and an intermediate display section located between the upper engagement section and the lower product support section. The product is secured to the product support section, and is exposed to allow the user to handle the product so as to evaluate and test the product prior to purchase. The upper engagement section and the lower product support section are configured so that the center of gravity of the product is generally in line with the location at which the hook engages the upper engagement section, so that the packaging arrangement and the product hang in a generally vertical orientation for display. The intermediate display section is defined by an outwardly facing wall, and may be configured to releasably secure a display card containing product information that is visible to the potential purchaser.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2003Date of Patent: July 4, 2006Assignees: Johnson Level & Tool Mfg. Publication number: 20020056203Abstract: A liquid-containing member is insert molded into a body. The liquid-containing member may be in the form of a level vial, which can be insert molded in a mold cavity having a shape corresponding to a vial retainer or corresponding to a level. The mold cavity is defined by a pair of mold sections which are configured to form an opening in the body, and the level vial is positioned to extend across the areas of the mold sections defining the opening. The ends of the level vial extend into an area of the mold cavity adapted to receive moldable material, such that injection of moldable material into the mold cavity surrounds and encapsulates the ends of the level vial. The vial is thus mounted to the body by means of the moldable material surrounding and encapsulating the ends of the vial, to securely engage the vial with the body and to eliminate a previously-required assembly step of mounting a vial to a body such as a vial retainer or a level.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 27, 2001Publication date: May 16, 2002Applicant: Johnson Level & Tool Mfg. Co., Inc.Inventors: Richard J. Gruetzmacher, Wayne R. Kinnally, James C. Koehler

Patent number: 6026581Abstract: A pocket level provided with magnet includes a housing having a sight opening formed therein. A liquid level indicator, in the form of a bubble vial having a pair of closed end walls, is slidably received within the open end portion of the housing and is observable through the sight opening. At least one of the closed end walls of the liquid level indicator is engageable with the housing. A cap is slidably inserted into the open end portion of the housing and a clip which is adapted to hold the level in one's pocket is secured thereto.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1996Date of Patent: February 22, 2000Assignee: Johnson Level & Tool Mfg. Patent number: 5937371Abstract: An inclinometer for providing two different, direct readings corresponding to the angle of inclination of a worksurface includes a pair of parallel gauging surfaces engageable with the worksurfaces in first and second distinct positions. The inclinometer includes a body which defines the gauging surfaces, and a pointer is mounted to the body and is biased toward a predetermined orientation when either gauging surface is placed on the worksurface. The body carries two differently calibrated scales, one of which is oriented so as to interact with the pointer when a first one of the gauging surfaces rests on the worksurface and the other of which interacts with the pointer to provide a second reading when a second one of the gauging surfaces is placed on the worksurface. The scales may be calibrated to provide an angle reading and a pitch reading, and are preferably applied to a cover plate which overlies a cavity defined by the body within which the pointer is pivotably mounted.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1998Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Assignee: Johnson Level & Tool Mfg. Patent number: 5207004Abstract: A post level is defined by a pair of right-angle walls. A horizontal bubble vial is mounted in each wall, and a vertical bubble vial is mounted at the intersection of the walls. The vials are mounted in the interior of a pair of spaced protrusions formed in each wall, which define internal structure engaging and cradling an end of the vial without positively retaining the vial within the protrusion. The protrusions open onto the inner surface of the walls, and a retainer plate is positioned over the opening of the protrusions to retain the vials within the interior of the protrusions. The retainer plate is light-reflective to enhance visibility of the vial bubble.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1991Date of Patent: May 4, 1993Assignee: Johnson Level & Tool Mfg. Patent number: 5138759Abstract: A cutting guide assembly consists of a pair of guide rails in end-to-end abutting relationship with a clamping plate frictionally engaging each guide rail to secure the rails together. Each guide rail has a cross section defining a channel. A ramped or inclined lip is disposed within the channel, and is engaged by the end of a flange provided on the clamping plate to force the flange toward an inwardly facing stop surface defined by a wall of the guide rails. A series of set screws provide relative downward movement of the clamping plate, to cause the end of the flange to ride on the inclined surface and to force an outwardly facing surface of the flange against the stop surfaces of the guide rails. In this manner, the vertical guide surfaces of the guide rails are automatically aligned with each other when the rails are secured together. The clamping plate includes a second flange, which engages a supporting surface formed on a second inwardly extending lip.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1991Date of Patent: August 18, 1992Assignee: Johnson Level & Tool Mfg.
