Patent number: 6805956Abstract: The present invention relates a process for manufacturing polymer coated wire and cable and an electrically conductive wire having a metal core and an outer electrically-insulative, polymer coating capable of withstanding temperatures as high as 150° C., wherein the polymer composition contains polyphenylene sulfide, a polymeric grafting agent and an ethylene copolymer. The polymeric grafting agent is a copolymer of at least about 50% by weight ethylene, about 0.5% to about 15% by weight of a reactive comonomer (e.g. unsaturated epoxide of 4-11 carbon atoms) and the ethylene copolymer comprises at least about 50% by weight ethylene and about 1% to about 35% by weight of an acid-containing unsaturated mono-carboxylic acid comonomer. The molar ratio of the reactive comonomer in the polymeric grafting agent to the unsaturated mono-carboxylic acid comonomer of the ethylene copolymer is to be maintained between 1.0 and 5.5 in order to achieve the desired polyphenylene sulfide wire coating properties.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2002Date of Patent: October 19, 2004Assignee: E.I. du Pont de Nemours and CompanyInventors: David M. Dean, Richard James Arhart

Patent number: 6716920Abstract: The present invention relates to high performance wire and cable compositions and to hot melt adhesives containing a silyl-grafted ethylene copolymer having particularly low levels of glycidyl acrylate monomer. The preferred epoxy glycidyl methacrylate copolymerized into the polymer backbone provides a graft site for the aminosilane. Subsequent moisture crosslinking at the silyl site of the thermally stable graft copolymer provides compositions with attractive physical properties for wire and cable semicons, insulation, and jackets, as well as hot melt adhesives. The preferred aminosilane is N-cyclohexylaminopropyl trimethoxysilane.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2002Date of Patent: April 6, 2004Assignee: E. I. du Pont de Nemours and CompanyInventors: Richard James Arhart, George Wyatt Prejean

Patent number: 6133367Abstract: The present invention relates to blends of copolymers having a certain percentage of vinyl acetate monomer with a terpolymer having a certain percentage of vinyl acetate wherein the composition provides heat and flame resistant properties to wires and cable or other manufactured goods prepared from such compositions. The preferred blends comprise or consist essentially of alkylene-vinyl acetate copolymers blended with alkylene/vinyl acetate/CO terpolymers selected from, for example, ethylene-vinyl acetate and ethylene/vinyl acetate/carbon monoxide. The blends are prepared by combining the ingredients with other excipients selected from aluminum trihydrate, carbon black, stearic acid, tri(2-methoxyethoxy) vinyl silane, polymeric hindered phenol, dilaurylthiopropionate, N,N'-m-phenylenedimalemide, and .alpha.,.alpha.'-bis (t-butylperoxy)diisopropylbenzene. The blends of the invention actually simulate a high vinyl acetate content EVA.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1998Date of Patent: October 17, 2000Assignee: E.
