  • Patent number: 9696326
Abstract: A test sample is provided for testing performance of measuring and monitoring equipment for production lines, for example for foodstuffs or pharmaceuticals, and in particular, contamination monitoring equipment employing X-rays and/or metal detectors to spot foreign bodies in packaged products. The test sample may comprise a laminated card enclosing a standardised test piece such as a metal particle of specified size. The card or other sample may bear at least one identification containing a barcode, readable by an optical scanner. To test the equipment, a card is placed on a product package passing through the equipment, the optical scanner reads the barcode to confirm that the correct test sample has been submitted, and the results for the test sample are recorded in a computer log. If the results do not match those expected from the particular test sample submitted, the equipment fails the test and requires recalibration or repair.

  • Patent number: 9680641
Abstract: Techniques and tools for quantum key distribution (“QKD”) between a quantum communication (“QC”) card, base station and trusted authority are described herein. In example implementations, a QC card contains a miniaturized QC transmitter and couples with a base station. The base station provides a network connection with the trusted authority and can also provide electric power to the QC card. When coupled to the base station, after authentication by the trusted authority, the QC card acquires keys through QKD with a trust authority. The keys can be used to set up secure communication, for authentication, for access control, or for other purposes. The QC card can be implemented as part of a smart phone or other mobile computing device, or the QC card can be used as a fillgun for distribution of the keys.

  • Patent number: 9680640
Abstract: Techniques and tools for implementing protocols for secure multi-party communication after quantum key distribution (“QKD”) are described herein. In example implementations, a trusted authority facilitates secure communication between multiple user devices. The trusted authority distributes different quantum keys by QKD under trust relationships with different users. The trusted authority determines combination keys using the quantum keys and makes the combination keys available for distribution (e.g., for non-secret distribution over a public channel). The combination keys facilitate secure communication between two user devices even in the absence of QKD between the two user devices. With the protocols, benefits of QKD are extended to multi-party communication scenarios. In addition, the protocols can retain benefit of QKD even when a trusted authority is offline or a large group seeks to establish secure communication within the group.

  • Patent number: 9669856
Abstract: An accessory tray is connected to, or extends integrally from, a shopping cart handle and extends a limited distance forward from the handle. The tray extends forward above, but not significantly interfering with, the child-seat area of the cart. Preferably, the forward extremity is not directly connected or attached to the cart, but rather the tray is cantilevered from its rear end/edge fixed to/at the handle and extends otherwise unconnected forward from the handle. A forward tray portion may rest on, or be close to, an upper portion/end of the cart rear wall. The preferred tray is substantially planar, featuring a single, flat platform with an upending rim, wherein no part extends above said top level of the handle. The tray remains in place for nesting of multiple carts, and is received in a space between nested portions of the cart to which it is connected.

  • Patent number: 9667960
Abstract: Methods and circuitry are provided for finding an optimum vector for motion-compensated prediction in video coding. Processing circuitry is operable to define a block in an image, the defined block having a plurality of pixels. A first set of residuals is calculated using a first motion vector. Each residual of the first set of residuals corresponds to a respective pixel within the plurality of pixels. Additionally, a first plurality of absolute differences is calculated. Each absolute difference in the first plurality of absolute differences is between a pair of residuals in the first set of residuals. The first plurality of absolute differences is summed, and is compared to sums of absolute differences of residuals calculated using other motion vectors. The motion vector corresponding to the lowest sum may be identified as an optimum motion vector.

  • Publication number: 20170136528
Abstract: A high-pressure die casting apparatus including a shot sleeve extending through a first die half to a molding surface, and a plunger received in the shot sleeve is provided. The shot sleeve includes a side wall presenting a fluid passageway and a partial end wall disposed in a fixed position relative to the side wall. The partial end wall defines a wall opening adjacent the molding surface. Fluid is poured into the shot sleeve while the die apparatus is open, and the partial end wall prevents the fluid from flowing out of the shot sleeve. The plunger then presses the material into the mold cavity until only a portion of the material remains in the shot sleeve and blocks the wall opening. After the solidified material is ejected from the apparatus, the portion of material blocking the wall opening prevents lubricant from entering the shot sleeve.
