  • Publication number: 20110051277
Abstract: A method is provided for securely erasing residual data on a magnetic tape formatted with a plurality of servo patterns providing boundaries between a plurality of data bands containing data that is recorded thereon during normal write operations, the data being written on many adjacent data tracks that run parallel to an edge of the magnetic tape. The method includes identifying a first edge of each of the plurality of servo patterns and erasing a portion (for example, a first half) of each of the plurality of data bands during a first pass of a tape head as it moves in a first direction. The method further includes the step of indexing the tape head to identify an opposite second edge of each of the plurality of servo patterns and erasing a different portion (for example, an opposite second half) of each of the plurality of data bands during a second pass of the tape head as the tape head moves in a second direction opposite the first direction.

  • Patent number: 5080825
Abstract: A water based cleaning composition suitable for use in tape drives including very small quantities of a surfactant, preferably a tridecyl alcohol ether of polyoxyethylene, and an ionic salt of ammonia is disclosed. The quantity of surfactant is such that it is totally water soluble and furthermore does not exist as a free solvent susceptible to evaporation into the environment. The combination of the surfactant and an ionic salt of ammonia, preferably ammonium carbonate, enhances detergency and the suspension of debris without leaving a residue. In addition, the ionic salt of ammonia is provided in a quantity which maintains a neutral pH, thereby minimizing the corrosiveness of the cleaning composition and eliminating static.

  • Patent number: 4525424
Abstract: Flexible magnetic recording media having chromium dioxide magnetic particles dispersed in a polyester-polyurethane binder which is a reaction product of (A) a hydroxyl-terminated polyester which itself is a reaction product of a hydrolytically stable difunction alcohol (preferably 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol), (B) a chain extender (preferably 1,4-butanediol), and (C) an aromatic diisocyanate [preferably 4,4'-methylenebis (1,4-phenylene) diisocyanate (MDI)]. The proportions of (A), (B) and (C) are selected to produce a polyester polyurethane having a hard segment content in the range of 37 to 40 percent by weight, of a molecular weight above 60,000, with the soft segment molecular weight (M.sub.n) being in the range of about 500 to 1500.

  • Patent number: 4454282
Abstract: A stable, non-agglomerating, magnetic recording coating ink, for use in coating a flexible non-magnetic substrate, is made by a two-step process which first mixes finely divided chromium dioxide particles with water and a polymeric surfactant/dispersant agent which has as its major functionality in a side chain, carboxylic acid, as a free acid, ester or amide thereof, and of a relatively low number average molecular weight in the range 500 to 20,000. Only after the particles are dispersed in this slurry is water-based polyurethane binder added to the slurry, as the second step in the process, to form the final ink.
