  • Patent number: 4233029
Abstract: A liquid transport device and method are disclosed, for controlled liquid flow. The device contains opposed surfaces providing a controlled capillary flow zone, each surface including means for directing flow along predetermined paths and at least one surface including means to permit liquid introduction between the surfaces. At least a portion of the paths of one surface form a positive angle with respect to the paths of the directly opposing portion of the other surface, whereby controlled multidirectional flow of liquid introduced between the surfaces occurs with a predetermined peripheral configuration.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 25, 1978
Date of Patent: November 11, 1980
    Assignee: Eastman Kodak Company
    Inventor: Richard L. Columbus
  • Patent number: 4169060
Abstract: A device is provided for collecting and separating a two-phase liquid, and for dispensing the light phase. The device provides improved structure such that the dispensing aperture is protected from premature liquid contact by a partition. Upon phase separation, the partition automatically allows flow of the light phase to the aperture.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: September 25, 1979
    Assignee: Eastman Kodak Company
    Inventor: Richard L. Columbus
  • Patent number: 4136036
Abstract: A device for collecting and dispensing non-pressurized liquids, comprising a collection compartment having a capillary passageway extending from an intake and along the entire sample collection length of the compartment, and a dispensing chamber.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 22, 1978
Date of Patent: January 23, 1979
    Assignee: Eastman Kodak Company
    Inventor: Richard L. Columbus
  • Patent number: 4091802
Abstract: A collection device wherein fill-augmenting means are provided in a vented collection compartment, whereby rate of collection is increased, and capture means are provided to prevent leakage of the collected liquid out of the vent. The device is particularly useful in the collection and further processing of blood to obtain blood serum for clinical analysis.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 17, 1976
Date of Patent: May 30, 1978
    Assignee: Eastman Kodak Company
    Inventor: Richard L. Columbus
  • Patent number: 4041995
Abstract: Apparatus and a process for drop-by-drop metering of fluids, especially biological fluids such as blood serum, wherein a removable container having a drop-forming platform is pressurized by apparatus not requiring apparatus contact with the fluid other than via the container. Preferably, a pressure detecting and feed back system can be included to ascertain whether or not the drop-forming sequence has been properly achieved.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 24, 1975
Date of Patent: August 16, 1977
    Assignee: Eastman Kodak Company
    Inventor: Richard L. Columbus
  • Patent number: 4012325
Abstract: A blood serum separator-dispenser capable of collecting, separating and/or dispensing is disclosed a biological fluid such as serum from an essentially closed container. A valve can be provided to separate the container into two compartments, one for serum separation and the other for serum dispensing.
