  • Patent number: 5417640
Abstract: An improved method of preventing cohesion between plastic coated, paperboard, folding carton blanks after they come off a die cutter or cutting section of a press. The method comprises providing different scoring patterns for the carton blanks of alternate rows as the cartons are formed, which results in the creation of air spaces between adjacent cartons to prevent them from sticking to each other.

  • Patent number: 4609143
Abstract: A thread and punch lock for article carriers includes a first closure panel with a plurality of spaced tongues along its terminal end. A locking tab is provided in longitudinal line with each tongue and adjacent thereto. The tab extends in opposing direction to the tongue; the tab and tongue together forming a locking unit. The second closure panel includes two substantially parallel, transversely elongated slits for receiving each locking unit when the closure panels are in proper overlapping relation. Disposed between these slits is the closure panel material forming a protector strap. The closure panels are locked together by inserting the tongue through the slit furthest from the edge of the second closure panel. The tab is then punched in the slit nearest the edge of the second closure panel so as to overlie the second closure panel and create edge to edge engagement. The protector strap overlies the tab along the interior of the carrier to hold the tab in locked engagement and provide extra strength.

  • Patent number: 4471903
Abstract: An article carrier is formed from an elongated blank having overlapping bottom panels to support articles in at least one row. One of the bottom panels has a plurality of spaced tongues at its terminal end. A plurality of separate locking tabs are longitudinally aligned with each tongue. The other of the bottom panels has transversely elongated apertures with each of the apertures receiving one of the tongues. Each of the tongues has engagement with one transverse edge of the aperture and one of the plurality of separate locking tabs has an edge to edge overlying engagement with the opposite transverse edge of the aperture. Each of the apertures is increased in size in accordance with which of the separate locking tabs overlies the opposite transverse edge of the aperture. Each of the separate locking tabs are selected for use in accordance with the dimensions of the adjacent article or articles supported by the carrier.

  • Patent number: 4304352
Abstract: A tray having side wals and a bottom wall is provided with leakproof gusset corners including overlapping gusset panels connected by a center fold line. Side fiold lines connect the respective gusset panels to the side walls with sealing portions of the gusset panels extending the full depth of the side walls for full depth leakproofness of the tray. A cut-out in the inner gusset panel allows bonding of the outer gusset panel against the side wall strengthening the corner of the tray and assuring the sealing action. The cut-out in the inner gusset panel is particularly shaped to form the sealing portion and to allow maximum bonding of the outer gusset panel. A peripheral flange is formed of flange sections having alternate extensions with abutting edges to provide an equal width flange around each corner and the full periphery of the tray. During folding, the flange extension cooperates with a rounded corner of the sealing portion of the inner gusset panel to assure smooth and efficient folding action.

  • Patent number: 4216897
Abstract: A corner lock carton exhibiting improved lock retention includes a base panel, a pair of wall panels, and a locking flap panel joined to one of the wall panels. The other wall panel includes a locking slit formed inwardly thereon to receive the locking flap panel. The slit has a vertical segment, a horizontal segment, and an angled segment connecting the vertical and horizontal segments the ends of the angled segments being disposed at an angle of 40.degree. to the vertical segment. The flap panel includes a lock member having a first edge portion aligned parallel to the vertical segment of the slit when the carton is erected and a second edge portion disposed at an angle of 45.degree. to the first edge portion. When the wall panels are erected, the lock member is disposed through the slit, and the second edge portion of lock member engages the slit at a point adjacent the juncture of the vertical segment and the angled segment to securely interlock the flap panel and slit together.

  • Patent number: 4215781
Abstract: An article carrier of the wraparound type formed from a single sheet of paperboard and having top, bottom, and side panels separated by fold lines and which includes article retaining gussets formed at the corners of the bottom and side panels, the gussets being held in place by the weight of the article. Each gusset is formed having three triangular sections separated from each other and the side and bottom panels by fold lines, with a first section adjacent the bottom panel being folded through 180.degree. to lie flat on the bottom panel. The middle section is folded on top of the first section which causes the remaining section adjacent to the side panel to be erected in its retaining position. Articles contained within the carrier rest on the two folded sections to secure the retaining gussets and prevent movement of the articles.

  • Patent number: 4194676
Abstract: A heat-sealable leakproof container formed from a cut and scored blank of paperboard incorporates foldable gusset panel structural configuration which obviates leakage from the container and enhances its strength and rigidity. The container includes a pair of side wall panels adapted to be secured in an overlapping relationship which are foldably attached at front and rear edges of a bottom wall panel. A pair of double gusset sections are foldably secured at opposite sides of the bottom wall panel and also to the side wall panels. Each gusset section comprises a first triangular panel foldably secured to the bottom wall panel with second and third triangular panels foldably secured between the first triangular panel and the respective side wall panels. The second and third triangular panels are adapted to overlap and the fold line in between nest together when the gusset section is folded to provide a strong leakproof joint.
