Patent number: 5078739Abstract: An improved heart valve prosthesis (20) suited for replacement of any of the four valves in the heart. The invention includes a generally annular orifice ring (22) having a fluid flow bore with a smooth inner wall (26) through which blood flows, controlled by two pivoted leaflet occluders (40), supported at the downstream edge of the orifice ring. The occluders are supported at the outboard edges of the orifice ring, overlapping the fluid flow bore and generally about each other to seal backflow and regulate flow in one direction only. Occluder travel is limited by bending moment resistance of the occluder hinge and lateral blood flow. Occluder hinges are unloaded at a point between fully opened and fully closed. The bearing surfaces between the occluder means and the annular orifice are wide enough to allow the valve to be constructed from materials of different hardnesses.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1990Date of Patent: January 7, 1992Assignee: Janus Biomedical, Inc.Inventor: Richard L. Patent number: 4822452Abstract: A method for forming a fibrous web by wet-laying fibers on paper-making equipment, the web comprising staple length natural or synthetic fibers and wood cellulose paper-making fibers wherein a water furnish of the fibers is made up with an associative thickener in the absence of a conventional surfactant. A preferred associative thickener for use with hydrophobic fibers is a urethane block copolymer having a polyethylene glycol backbone, the associative thickener acting as both surfactant and thickener. With predominately cellulosic fibers, i.e. conventional wood cellulose fibers, or a mixture of conventional and contorted wood fibers, and synthetic cellulosic fibers, such as rayon, a hydroxyethyl cellulose having a long alkyl side chain is preferred. Excellent consistency of the water and fiber dispersion is obtained at relatively low viscosity with rapid drainage of water from the wire and uniform formation of the web.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1988Date of Patent: April 18, 1989Assignee: James River Corporation of VirginiaInventors: Stephen H. Patent number: 4683883Abstract: A two-piece heart valve holder engageable by a separate handle for positioning and rotating the heart valve. The holder includes a cylindrically-shaped plug member that has a recessed shoulder at one end and a V-shaped seat at the other end. Two passages extend through the plug member from the one end. A separate grip member includes two legs which extend through the passageways in the plug member. The two legs each include a base member. The two base members are hinged together with the legs biased outwardly, and each leg has an outwardly projecting valve-engaging foot at the distal end thereof. When the upper ends of the legs engage walls defining the passages, the legs are cammed outwardly so that the feet engage the edge of the valve body of the prosthesis to prevent its removal from the plug member. Once the prosthesis is sutured in place, the grip member is released by lifting a tab that extends upwardly from one of the base members.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1985Date of Patent: August 4, 1987Assignee: Hemex Scientific, Inc.Inventor: Richard L. Patent number: 4395318Abstract: Test, auxiliary and reference electrodes are immersed in a corrodant fluid. The test electrode is cathodically polarized by a cathodic polarization circuit. Peak current flow in the auxiliary electrode is measured and a linear cathodic polarization function is generated by a computer circuit. The test electrode is forwardly and reversely anodically polarized by an anodic polarization circuit. A comparator circuit senses the voltage of the test electrode with respect to the auxiliary electrode during reverse anodic polarization and compares this value to the cathodic polarization function. When the test electrode voltage and cathodic polarization function are equal, an anodic memory circuit stores the value of the current passing through the test electrode. This current is the pitting current which is converted into pitting rate.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1982Date of Patent: July 26, 1983Assignee: Petrolite CorporationInventors: William S. Tait, Richard L. Martin, Richard A. Rodgers

Patent number: 4343660Abstract: This invention relates to the process of inhibiting corrosion, and to compositions employed therein, which comprises coating copper with a barrier corrosion inhibitor, such as a water insoluble sulfonate, for example a petroleum or similar sulfonate as illustrated by a metal petroleum sulfonate, which contains an agent capable of complexing with copper, such as an organic sulfur, nitrogen, or sulfur-nitrogen compound for example an organic triazole, thiazole or the like. This process is particularly effective in inhibiting the corrosion of copper buried in the earth such as occurs when copper is exposed to electrochemical forces such as when copper is employed as neutral wires wrapped around the outside of an insulated power conducting cable and buried in the earth.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1978Date of Patent: August 10, 1982Assignee: Petrolite CorporationInventor: Richard L. Patent number: 4075291Abstract: Pyrophosphates, containing both oxygen and sulfur, of the formula ##STR1## where X is oxygen or sulfur such as those of the formula ##STR2## where R is other than a lower alkyl group (i.e. containing less than seven carbon atoms) and preferably a higher alkyl (i.e. at least six carbons), phenol, etc., and most preferably an oxyalkylated radical. Pyrophosphates are prepared by reacting P.sub.2 S.sub.5 with the appropriate alcohol and continuing the reaction to convert the O,O-disubstituted dithiophosphoric acid initially formed to the pyrophosphate. The resulting product usually contains the O,O-disubstituted dithiophosphoric acid in addition to the pyrophosphate. The pyrophosphate, or mixture of the pyrophosphate with the O,O-disubstituted dithiophosphoric acid, is particularly useful as a corrosion inhibitor in oxygenated and/or aqueous systems as well as for other uses, etc.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1976Date of Patent: February 21, 1978Assignee: Petrolite CorporationInventors: Derek Redmore, Benjamin T.
