  • Patent number: 10425128
Abstract: A system for transmitting data between components of an industrial vehicle that are powered by electricity received through a power line is provided. The system includes a first electrical choke with a conductor arranged to pass through the first electrical choke and to connect a first component to the power line, and a first communication circuit for at least one of sending and receiving signals and having a transmission wire for carrying the signals. When the first communication circuit transmits a communication signal, the communication signal passes along the transmission wire through the first electrical choke in a first direction, and subsequently the communication signal passes along the conductor through the first electrical choke in a second direction opposite to the first direction thereby cancelling attenuation of the communication signal by the first electrical choke.

  • Patent number: 8763990
Abstract: A lift truck includes systems and methods for improved stability control while turning, including a rotatable drive unit having a steerable drive tire. A first slide mechanism is coupled to the rotatable drive unit, and a second slide mechanism is mounted to a caster plate. A steering mechanism coupled to the rotatable drive unit is moved to steer the steerable drive tire, causing the first slide mechanism to interact with the second slide mechanism and to produce a downward pressure and/or reduce the downward pressure on a caster mounted to the caster plate.

  • Publication number: 20130338885
Abstract: Operation of the industrial vehicle is managed by devices onboard the vehicle. One such management device includes a portable memory device issued to a person authorized to operate the vehicle. The vehicle control system, by reading data from the portable memory device, determines whether the person is permitted to operate that particular industrial vehicle and if so enables that operation. Another management device transmits a data signal through a power line on the industrial vehicle and uses a magnetically permeable wire bead in a unique manner to negate a short circuit effect that a component has on the data signal transmission. A further management device includes a module to interface a data acquisition module, designed to connect to a communication network of one type of industrial vehicle, for use with other vehicles.

  • Patent number: 8504241
Abstract: A steering mechanism includes a handle with a tiller arm coupled to the handle via a flexible joint allowing relative movement of the handle about the tiller arm. A handle centering mechanism forming part of the steering mechanism includes a first end fixedly secured to the handle and a second end extending into a channel of the tiller arm. The second end compresses bumpers disposed on opposing sides of the second end. The bumpers urge the handle toward a neutral position wherein when a force is applied to move the handle away from a home position relative to the tiller arm, one of the compressed bumpers of the pair of compressed bumpers is further compressed. When the force is removed, the handle is returned to the home position by action of the pair of compressed bumpers. Preferably, the steering mechanism includes a torque sensing arrangement having a sensor and a magnet.

  • Patent number: 8467937
Abstract: A power steering assist system for a hand-steered pallet truck includes a joint assembly having a pivot joint, handle biasing mechanism, and a torque sensing arrangement. The pivot joint includes a pair of needle bearings and pivot pin disposed within a pivot block that provides a flexible connection between a handle and a tiller arm. The handle biasing mechanism includes a cantilevered beam spring and two cam rollers that resists an operator steering force applied to the handle and further, centers the handle with respect to the tiller arm after the force is released. The torque sensing arrangement includes a magnet and a non-contact magnetoresistive (MR) sensor that measures movement of the handle relative to the tiller arm which is used to determine operator steering intent, i.e., the amount of steering force applied to the handle. The MR sensor provides accurate torque measurements regardless of the angle of the tiller arm.

  • Patent number: 8433469
Abstract: A propulsion drive system is operated by a controller to propel an industrial vehicle along a path in an unmanned mode. An autonomous processor module sends commands to the vehicle controller in response to messages received via a communication network from a guidance and navigation system. The guidance and navigation system transmits a message over the communication network, wherein that message contains a first numerical value specifying the velocity and a second numerical value specifying an amount that the propulsion drive system is to turn a wheel of the industrial vehicle. The message also specifies a maximum speed limit and indicators commanding that a load carried by the industrial vehicle be raised and lowered. The autonomous processor module transmits a feedback message indicate actual vehicle operating parameters to the guidance and navigation system.

  • Patent number: 8084716
Abstract: An open forklift truck is provided having an elongated windshield that protects the operator from wind chills experienced when operating the truck in a cold storage environment. The windshield is a laminate having a plurality of heating elements disposed therein that are electrically connected to a control that monitors speed, battery voltage, temperature, and ambient feedback and adjusts the power supply to the windshield based on this feedback. Accordingly, the windshield is maintained at a predetermined temperature selected to limit condensation and fogging of the windshield.

  • Patent number: 7730981
Abstract: A lift truck power source includes a hybrid power supply including a storage battery, a capacitor bank, and optionally a fuel cell. The capacitor bank stores power produced during regeneration by either the truck traction system or the lift system and delivers current when current demand exceeds that delivered by the fuel cell. The storage battery or fuel cell acts as a main power supply to deliver current at a rate sufficient to power the lift truck. When the fuel cell is the main power supply, the storage battery stores power during times when current demand is less than that delivered by the fuel cell and delivers current at times when current demand is greater than that delivered by the fuel cell. When the storage battery is the main power supply, the fuel cell supplements the power delivered by the storage battery, and can also recharge the storage battery.

  • Patent number: 7051832
Abstract: A material handling vehicle includes first and second control handles positioned at opposing ends of an operator compartment. The first control handle is positioned adjacent the forks for driving the vehicle in a fore or forks first direction, and the second control handle is positioned adjacent the back of the vehicle for driving the vehicle in the aft or forks trailing direction. The control handles provide stability for the operator and an intuitive operator interface irrespective of direction of travel.

  • Publication number: 20030134296
Abstract: To facilitate preparation of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) which specifically binds a particular template substance, a virtual library of functional monomers is screened to find those that interact strongly with a molecular model of the substance. A selected few are then “annealed” with the substance in a computer simulation. This shows the optimum ratios of template substance to individual monomers. An appropriate mixture of monomers is then polymerised in the presence of the template to produce a MIP.

  • Patent number: 5778327
Abstract: The present invention features a universal, manned, material handling vehicle. The material handling vehicle is capable of operating in a manned mode, a wire guidance mode, and a rail guidance mode. This manned material handling vehicle contains a steering management control system having a logic program which allows the vehicle to adapt itself to different wire control systems. That is, particular parameters, frequency and amplitude of the underlying wire guidance system can be determined. In this manner, the manned vehicle is universally adaptive to a wide variety of wire guidance systems. When in manned operation mode, should the vehicle receive a wire guidance signal, the system controller will be duly informed. When in wire guidance operation mode, should the vehicle lose or fail to receive a clear wire guidance signal appropriate to guide on, it will automatically revert to the manned operation mode. The steering management control system also monitors the weight and height of the vehicle's load.

  • Patent number: 5340202
Abstract: The present invention features an improved technique for slowing and stopping a vehicle having an electric service motor, a mechanical parking brake, and a deadman's switch for engaging the mechanical brake. The method of the invention improves the efficiency of the braking procedure. The braking method initially determines if the deadman's switch is engaged. If it is, then the electric service motor is plugged at a predetermined minimum plug rate until the vehicle slows to a specified velocity. When the specified velocity is reached, the plugging operation is terminated. The mechanical brake is then engaged to slow the vehicle to a halt. When the vehicle comes to a halt, the parking brake remains engaged. The invention also improves safety by increasing the controlled rate of plugging to a maximum value in the event that the deadman's switch is off.
