Abstract: A composition of matter suitable for use as a dispersant-viscosity improver for lubricating oil compositions comprises the reaction product of reactants comprising(a) a hydrocarbon polymer grafted with an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or functional derivative thereof, and(b) at least one nitrogen and metal containing derivative of a hydrocarbon substituted polycarboxylic acid or functional derivative thereof; and optionally(c) at least one hydroxyl-containing polyester containing at least one condensable free hydroxyl group.

Abstract: A composition of about 2 to about 20 percent of a hydrogenated diene/vinyl aromatic block copolymer and a non-ionic surface active agent, soluble in said oil, comprising at least one ester or ether group, in a medium of oil of lubricating viscosity, exhibits reduced viscosity compared with comparable compositions without the surface active agent.

Abstract: Dispersant-viscosity improvers for lubricating oil compositions comprise the reaction product of reactants comprising(a) an oil soluble ethylene-alpha olefin copolymer wherein the alpha olefin is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.3-28 alpha olefins, said polymer having a number average molecular weight ranging from about 30,000 to about 300,000 grafted with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or functional derivative thereof;(b-1) at least one polyester containing at least one condensable hydroxyl group; and(b-2) at least one polyamine having at least one condensable primary or secondary amino group, and optionally further comprising (c) at least one hydrocarbyl substituted carboxylic acid or anhydride.

Abstract: A composition comprising (A) an ethylene-alpha olefin-bicyclic non-conjugated diene copolymer, wherein the alpha olefin contains from 3 to about 24 carbon atoms; (B) at least one organic sulfur containing compound selected from the group consisting of mercaptans and disulfides; and (C) a major amount of diluent; wherein the sulfur-containing compound (B) is present in amounts ranging from about 0.1% to about 15% by weight relative to the weight of the copolymer (A). This invention also relates to a method of shearing a composition comprising (A) an ethylene-alpha olefin-bicyclic non-conjugated diene copolymer and (C) a diluent, the improvement which comprises reducing or preventing the formation of gel-like particles on shearing by intimately mixing with said copolymer prior to shearing an amount of (B) an organic sulfur containing compound selected from the group consisting of mercaptans and disulfides in an amount sufficient to inhibit formation of said gel-like particles.

Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to a composition comprising:(A) at least 50% by weight of a fluorine-containing hydrocarbon having one or two carbon atoms; and(B) from about 9% to about 30% by weight of a phosphorus-containing lubricant composition comprising at least one compound characterized by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently hydrocarbyl groups or hydrocarbyloxyalkylene groups and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 taken together have from 2 to about 24 carbon atoms excluding any oxyalkylene carbon atoms; and Z is a hydrocarbyl group having 1 to about 18 carbon atoms.The present invention provides phosphorous-containing compositions which are compatible with fluorine-containing hydrocarbons used in refrigerators and air-conditioners, and are accordingly useful as refrigeration liquids in refrigerators and air-conditioners including auto, home, and industrial air-conditioners.

Abstract: A lubricant composition having improved viscosity index characteristics is described that comprises(A) at least one vegetable or synthetic triglyceride oil of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are aliphatic hydrocarbyl groups having at least 60 percent monounsaturated character and containing from about 6 to about 24 carbon atoms and further wherein an oleic acid moiety:linoleic acid moiety is from about 2 up to about 90 and(B) at least one mixed ester of a carboxy-containing interpolymer.Optionally, the composition may also contain(C) a synthetic ester base oil, and(D) an antioxidant.

Abstract: A composition of an oil-soluble, olefin-based polymer and an oil-soluble polar polymer having nitrogen functionality, wherein the polymers in combination in oil exhibit incompatibility as evidenced by phase separation, shows improved compatibility by addition to the mixture of certain hydrocarbyl substituted hydroxyaromatic materials.

Abstract: This invention relates to a composition comprising (A) a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and (B) a minor amount of (i) a reaction product of (a) at least one dimercaptothiadiazole, and (b) at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated ester prepared by reacting an alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acylating agent with a hydroxy compound, or (ii) a salt of the reaction product, provided that when the acylating agent is a monocarboxylic acylating agent then the hydroxy compound is a monohydroxy compound, and provided that when the ester is formed from a maleic acylating agent, then the ester is formed from a sulfur-containing hydroxy compound or a combination of a polyhydroxy compound and a monohydroxy. The invention also relates to aqueous fluids, greases, and concentrate compositions containing the reaction products and its salts. These additives generally show an ability to improve antiwear (including extreme pressure) and antioxidation properties of lubricants, aqueous fluids, and greases.

Abstract: Phosphorus-containing compositions and carboxylic ester compositions are described. The esters are useful as synthetic lubes and as lubricants in liquid compositions containing fluorine-containing hydrocarbons. Abstract: A graft polymer is prepared by grafting, onto a polymeric substantially saturated hydrocarbon backbone, a free-radical polymerizable vinyl nitrogen monomer, which grafting takes place with improved efficiency in the presence of minor amounts of a volatile aliphatic hydrocarbon substituted aromatic solvent capable of free-radical hydrogen atom chain transfer. The modified hydrocarbon based polymer finds utility as an additive for lubricating oils, particularly as dispersant-viscosity improvers for engine oils.

Abstract: Nitrogen-free esters of a carboxy-containing interpolymer, wherein the interpolymer has an inherent viscosity ranging from about 0.05 to 1.5 are disclosed. The esters are useful as additives in functional fluids including transmission fluids (both automatic and manual), hydraulic fluids and gear fluids. The transmission, hydraulic and gear fluids containing the esters exhibit improved shear stability while maintaining desired high and low temperature viscosity characteristics.
