Patent number: 6920354Abstract: The present invention is directed to a defibrillator having both a manual and an AED mode with corresponding user commands for both modes. The defibrillator includes a door which conceals manual mode commands, such that opening of the door puts the defibrillator in the manual mode and simultaneously reveals the manual mode command buttons. In one actual embodiment, the door includes apertures which allow access to the AED command buttons. When the door is in the open position, a keypad is revealed having manual commands which preferably take the form of buttons. In another actual embodiment, the door includes a switch which senses when the door is opened and sends the defibrillator into manual mode. The door includes a front side having AED command buttons, and a back side having manual mode command buttons. The door conceals a keypad having further manual mode command buttons.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 2003Date of Patent: July 19, 2005Assignee: Medtronic Physio-Control Manufacturing Corp.Inventors: John C. Patent number: 6813517Abstract: A defibrillator can be programmed with multiple energy protocols to be followed when the defibrillator administers therapy to a patient. Each energy protocol defines a sequence of energy dosages or levels to be applied during consecutive shocks. When the defibrillator is activated, the first energy dosage in the sequence is administered to the patient. If the first dosage is ineffective, the defibrillator administers subsequent dosages to the patient. Programming multiple energy protocols into the defibrillator allows the defibrillator to be adapted for use on a variety of patients with diverse needs, such as children and large adults, thereby improving the versatility of the defibrillator. Furthermore, because the expert responder can select the energy protocol most appropriate for the needs of the particular patient, therapy may be more effective.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2001Date of Patent: November 2, 2004Assignee: Medtronic Physio-Control Corp.Inventors: John C. Patent number: 5853128Abstract: Method and apparatus for controlling the exit velocity of solid/gas carbon dioxide spray cleaning systems. By increasing the pressure of liquid carbon dioxide in the supply line, typically in the range of 800-875 psi, to greater than 875 psi, preferably 2,000-5,000 psi and above, the velocity of the spray stream exiting the nozzle is increased enabling removal of contamination (oils, fingerprints, particles, graffiti, etc.) not removable with a spray stream using conventional carbon dioxide pressures. The apparatus includes the incorporation of a high-pressure pump in the liquid carbon dioxide supply line in combination with a nozzle having a first or inlet orifice smaller in diameter than the supply line and a second or exit orifice larger in diameter than the inlet orifice.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1997Date of Patent: December 29, 1998Inventors: Howard S. Patent number: 5247380Abstract: An infrared data communications network in which groups of personal computers and associated peripherals may communicate by infrared signals which each other. The system utilizes a error correction and a packet switched protocol which allows any terminal to select communications with any other terminal or terminals without degradation of the error rate. Error free transmission is maintained by means of error correcting encoding and a handshake protocol. The packet switched protocol permits any terminal to function as a store and forward repeater thus making the system more reliable and less susceptible to beam blockage.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1992Date of Patent: September 21, 1993Inventors: Richard M. Lee, Gary T. Cromack

Patent number: 4976100Abstract: A system and method are provided for recovering heat from the exhaust gas of a gas turbine operating in a combined cycle power plant. Heat is recovered by transferring it to feedwater supplied to a heat recovery steam generator. The heat recovery steam generator generates steam for expansion in a steam turbine, thereby producing additional rotating shaft power, and injection into the combustor of the gas turbine, thereby reducing nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas. Feedwater from the condenser is entered directly into a feedwater heater in the heat recovery steam generator, thus avoiding the use of steam for feedwater heating. Acid corrosion is avoided by regulating the heat transferred from the exhaust gas to the feedwater heater in the event high sulfur fuel is burned in the gas turbine combustor.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1989Date of Patent: December 11, 1990Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Richard M. Lee

Patent number: 4353206Abstract: In a combined cycle power plant having one or more combustion turbines and a steam turbine, a dry catalytic NOx removal module is disposed in each of the turbine exhaust stacks. A waste heat exchanger system includes an economizer coil and a pair of high pressure evaporator coils on upstream and downstream sides of the NOx removal module to generate steam for injection into the turbine combustors and for delivery to a superheater coil upstream from the upstream evaporator coil. A bypass stack across the upstream evaporator coil is damper controlled to regulate the exhaust gas temperature at the entry to the NOx removal module. A downstream low pressure evaporator coil generates steam for induction into the low pressure section of the steam turbine. Superheated steam is supplied to the high pressure section of the steam turbine.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1980Date of Patent: October 12, 1982Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Richard M. Patent number: 4353207Abstract: In a single cycle combustion turbine power plant, a dry catalytic NOx removal module is disposed in the turbine exhaust stack. A waste heat exchanger system includes an economizer coil and a pair of evaporator coils on upstream and downstream sides of the NO.sub.x removal module to generate steam for injection into the turbine combustors. Bypass stacks across the coils are damper controlled to regulate the exhaust gas temperature at the entry to the NOx removal module. The compressor inlet guide vanes are closed to increase exhaust gas temperature as required after the upstream evaporator bypass flow reaches zero and no longer controls gas temperature. If the inlet guide vanes reach the fully closed position, reductant injection flow is shut off to terminate the NOx removal process under low exhaust gas temperature conditions. A plant afterburner is operated to add heat to the exhaust gas if gas temperature is too low.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1980Date of Patent: October 12, 1982Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Richard M. Lee

Patent number: 4306834Abstract: The turbine section of a gas turbine engine includes structure in the disc cavity for separating high pressure air into cooling air for delivery to cooled blades and sealing air for preventing hot motive fluid from entering the cavity. A disc cavity seal is provided to minimize leakage of the sealing air into the motive gas path resulting in increased air pressure on the air separator structure (which is integrally attached to the rotor) and providing a balance piston for counteracting the normal thrust on the rotor and reducing the thrust bearing load. The resultant decrease in leakage of high pressure air also improves the engine performance efficiency.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1979Date of Patent: December 22, 1981Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Richard M. Lee
