Publication number: 20110244833Abstract: In the preferred computer system, the user is provided with a separate Internet-accessible entity referred to here as the “personal page.” A personal page, preferably, includes memory for storing information related to the user. For example, on his/her personal page the user indicates what he/she wishes to purchase, possibly along with other criteria associated with the purchase, such as, for example, a time that the purchase should take The user is provided with the ability to create personalized bidding rules that vendors that offer goods and services must respect. Vendors have the ability to specify similar criteria, which describe the goods and/or services they offer. Vendors can indicate, for example, the prices of their goods, times and places that their services are available, etc. Preferably, these specifications, called “vendor scripts,” are embodied in active software/data entities (agents) that traverse sites on the Internet visiting sites hosting users' personal pages.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 29, 2011Publication date: October 6, 2011Applicant: DI-WALKOR III SERVICES LLCInventors: Mikhail Lotvin, Richard M. Patent number: 5287499Abstract: An apparatus for performing storage and retrieval in an information storage system is disclosed which uses the hashing technique. In order to provide efficient and graceful operation under varying loading conditions, the system shifts between collision avoidance by linear probing with open addressing when the load is below a threshold, and collision avoidance by external chaining when the load is above a threshold. Insertion, deletion and retrieval operations are arranged to switch dynamically between the two collision avoidance stratagems as the local loading factor on the system, as measured by the number of records hashed to the same address, crosses preselected thresholds.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1991Date of Patent: February 15, 1994Assignee: Bell Communications Research, Inc.Inventor: Richard M. Nemes

Patent number: 5121495Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing storage and retrieval in an information storage system is disclosed which uses the hashing technique. In order to prevent contamination of the storage medium by automatically expiring records, a garbage collection technique is used which removes all expired records in the neighborhood of a probe into the data storge system. More particularly, each probe for insertion, retrieval or deletion of a record is an occasion to search the entire chain of records found for expired records and then removing them and closing the chain. This garbage collection automatically removes expired record contamination in the vicinity of the probe, thereby automatically decontaminating the storage space. Because no long term contamination can build up in the present system, it is useful for large data bases which are heavily used and which require the fast access provided by hashing.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1989Date of Patent: June 9, 1992Assignee: Bell Communications Research, Inc.Inventor: Richard M. Patent number: 4996663Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing storage and retrieval in an information storage system is disclosed which uses the hashing technique. In order to prevent contamination of the storage medium by deleted records, a hybrid hashing technique is used which uses a fast, contaminating deletion of records during times of heavy load on the system, but uses a slow, non-contaminating deletion when the load on the system is not as heavy. The slow, non-contaminating deletion automatically removes previously generated contamination in the vicinity of the slow, non-contaminating deletion, thereby automatically decontaminating the storage space. Because no long term contamination can build up in the present system, it is useful for large data bases which are heavily used and which require the fast access provided by hashing.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1988Date of Patent: February 26, 1991Assignee: Bell Communications Research, Inc.Inventor: Richard M.
