  • Publication number: 20050043646
Abstract: An automated method for treating tinnitus by habituation through use of neurological feedback, comprising the steps of connecting a subject through a set of attached headphones to an electronic sound player that is connected to a PC workstation presenting sound examples by software to the subject who can refine them by manipulating a series of controllers on the player, making an electronic recording of the sound in a digital music format, storing the recording in the computer, transferring a copy of the electronic sound file to the subject's electronic music player, generating an EEC signature of the subject's brain activity in response to the presented sound, sound using the customized sound to stimulate the auditory system while the brain activity is recorded, wherein the computer continuously monitors for the feedback signatures and drives the sound stimuli appropriately.

  • Publication number: 20050034079
Abstract: An approach is provided for supporting multi-media conferencing. Textual information (e.g., text associated with a presentation) is received for display during a conference session to multiple participants. For a particular participant, configuration information corresponding to the participant specifies language assistance for the textual information. Language assistance involves augmenting the textual information according to the configuration information for comprehension of the textual information by the particular participant. In one embodiment, the augmented textual information includes language translation of the textual information. • Patent number: 6842435
Abstract: The invention provides a system which monitors and controls upstream path congestion by utilizing a MAC layer protocol wherein an upstream communication cell is transmitted from a settop box to the headend. The upstream cell contains a message field and a retry count. The retry count is incremented upon failure of each attempt to communicate with the headend within the upstream path. A downstream cell from the headend to the settop terminals contains an acknowledgment field and an optional power control field. Upstream path congestion is monitored by the headend through averaging or other suitable monitoring all of the retry count field data which arrives from the network of settop terminals.

  • Publication number: 20040095560
Abstract: A flat-panel projection display comprises a tapered transparent slab (1), a projector (2) adapted to inject images into the thick end of the slab, a translucent screen (3) over the face of the slab from which the display is to be viewed, and spacers holding the screen away from the slab so that light emerging from the face of the slab can spread to cover the area of the screen. In this way the gaps or blank strips that would otherwise be present at the points where the light bundles are being reflected off the rear surface of the tapered waveguide are eliminated.

  • Publication number: 20040086023
Abstract: The invention provides a control strategy and a control system to control a gas sensor to a target operating temperature. It relies upon both feedback and model-based feedforward control systems to achieve and then maintain the sensor at the target operating temperature. The mechanization includes a gas sensor with a heating element in a feedstream. The control strategy employs a control system for the heating element that is based upon the target operating temperature, the temperature of the heating element, and an effect of the feedstream and mounting structure on the temperature of the sensor. The control strategy enables the control system to optimize the heating of a sensor during warm-up and steady state operations.

  • Publication number: 20040014426
Abstract: Wirelessly linking a portable audio device to an external audio system permits the external audio system to generate audible signals that enhance local playback of audio by the portable device. For example, the portable device wirelessly transmits lower frequency components of an audio signal to a subwoofer system for reproduction of bass frequencies extending below the playback capability of the portable device. In this manner, the external audio system provides bass enhancement for the portable audio device. Wireless transmissions between the portable audio device and the external audio system may be, but are not limited to, optical or radio frequency (RF) transmissions. Where RF signaling is used, the wireless link may be based on wireless network links, such as those supported by Bluetooth and 802.11b standards, or based on, for example, dedicated RF interfaces.

  • Patent number: 6637989
Abstract: A centering feature (230) on a drill bit (110) configured without a pointed tip, formed as an opening (230) between first (206) and second (208) relatively angularly inclined portions of a work engaging end (116) of the drill bit (110). The first portion (206) of the work engaging end (116) is defined by a cutting edge (134), and the second portion (208) is defined by an end face side boundary (216) transversely aligned with the cutting edge (134). The cutting edge (134) and end face side boundary (216) are offset from each other to create the opening (230), which permits the drill operator to view a punch mark or other indication on the work piece where the center (232) of the intended hole is to be located. The drill operator positions the medial termination point (212) of the cutting edge (134) of the drill bit (110) over the center hole location (232) preparatory to contacting the drill bit (110) against the work piece to cut the hole.

  • Publication number: 20030144996
Abstract: A method and system for transporting and displaying search results and information hierarchies provides a powerful tool for implementing Internet search engines, directory displays and interfaces to similar structures. Upon receiving a user request for an information access, binary search result information including quality of match information is downloaded from a server to the user site. The search information is then interpreted and a graphical output is generated. Interpretation at the client-side provides flexibility in presentation and active reorganization of the display. Graphical user interfaces use the local binary search data to provide user reorganization and inspection of the data. A user may navigate through a three-dimensional map organized by regions and categories, a two-dimensional map organized by match quality and/or an enhanced list display that provides local behavior to modify the information display based on the downloaded search data.

  • Publication number: 20030039242
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus are provided to enable access to mobile and voice over IP (VoIP) telephone networks with a mobile handset. A VoIP gateway for the VoIP telephone network is provided. A cable modem allows communication between the handset and the VoIP telephone network via the VoIP gateway. A local network connects the handset to the VoIP gateway. The mobile handset determines whether it is within range of the local network. If the handset is within the range of the local network, data traffic may be routed to and from the handset via the VoIP telephone network. If the handset is outside of the range of the local network, data traffic may be routed to and from the handset via the mobile telephone network. The data traffic may comprise telephony data traffic and/or Internet protocol (IP) data traffic.
