  • Patent number: 5157605
Abstract: Induction logging apparatus is disclosed which depends for its operation not only upon its arrangement of coils, but also upon the skin depth of the formation. The skin effect of the formation is used advantageously by operating a simple induction sonde at a plurality of frequencies simultaneously. Improved depth of investigation and improved vertical resolution result from the invention. Simple arrays are disclosed for the induction logging apparatus. A sonde with a single transmitter and a plurality of two-coil receiver arrays are preferred. The apparatus acquires both the in-phase and quadrature components of each receiver array signal at several frequencies. The response function is shaped by using a multi-channel deconvolution filter.

  • Patent number: 4873488
Abstract: Induction logging sonde including transmitter and receiver solenoid coils mounted on a support and axially separated from each other. The support is made of conductive material and comprises at least one first longitudinal portion for mounting the coils and second longitudinal portions on each side of the first portion. At least the first portion has a substantially continuous and axisymmetric outer surface so as to favor the flow of eddy currents around the surface, whereby the electric field on that surface is substantially cancelled.

  • Patent number: 4427944
Abstract: Method and apparatus for investigating earth formations according to the present invention include positioning an opening of a fluid reservoir in contact with the surface of an earth formation to be investigated and injecting the fluid at high pressures through the opening into the formation to cause a transient electrokinetic potential to form in the formation. The transient streaming potentials generated are detected by appropriate electrodes, and the outputs of the electrodes, representative of the generated potentials, are then processed to determine a characteristic response time of these streaming potentials. Thereafter, from a knowledge of the characteristic response time of the detected streaming potentials a measurement of the permeability of the formation is derived.

  • Patent number: 4175251
Abstract: A nuclear magnetism logging system and method is disclosed in which a surface unit provides power to, control of, and signal reception from a downhole sonde. The surface unit comprises a source of alternating current power and switching circuit means for applying a sequence of alternating current waveforms from the alternating current power source to a surface transformer, each waveform in the sequence starting and stopping with substantially zero amplitude. The switching circuit means memorizes the starting and stopping polarity of the immediately preceding waveform in the sequence, and starts and stops the present waveform in the sequence of waveforms with polarities opposite that of the memorized starting and stopping polarities of the immediately preceding waveform in the sequence. The downhole sonde of the system has a transformer, the primary coil of which is electrically connected to the secondary coil of the surface transformer.

  • Patent number: 4035718
Abstract: In the representative embodiment of the present invention disclosed herein, a nuclear-magnetism logging tool is arranged with at least its polarizing and detecting coil isolated in an enclosed chamber containing a uniquely-treated hydrogenous oil and preferably coupled to a suitable compensating system operatively arranged for responding to borehole pressure and temperature conditions. In particular, a selected, minor amount of a ferromagnetic colloid is dispersed in the oil in a sufficient concentration for uniquely effecting a controlled decay of nuclear magnetic noise signals from the coil-isolating oil, with this decay being of selected rapidity sufficient to avoid interference with the measurement of nuclear magnetic measurement signals from earth formations.
