  • Patent number: 6820936
Abstract: An office-type chair which provides for synchronous differential tilting of the seat and back assemblies, with the seat assembly being constructed such that the front lip thereof does not significantly lift upon rearward tilting. The chair incorporates a tilt control mechanism formed by a control body which secures to the upper end of the chair pedestal and an upright which pivotally connects to the control body about an axis disposed forwardly of the pedestal. A pivot assembly connects the upright and control body together.

  • Patent number: 6619746
Abstract: A height-adjustable and rotatable chair arm for an office chair includes a rotatable sleeve that is rotatably connected to an upright support post of the chair, and an arm assembly supported on the sleeve. Rotation of the sleeve relative to the upright permits the chair arm to be rotated to a desired position. Additionally, the sleeve includes a vertical row of slots and the arm assembly includes a lock mechanism which engages the slots whereby the arm assembly is vertically slidable along the sleeve and lockable at a selected elevation to adjust the height of the chair arm.

  • Patent number: 6533355
Abstract: A height adjustment mechanism in a chair operates automatically by raising and lowering a chair component such as a chair back. The height adjustment mechanism is provided on a chair back or other chair support and includes a gear which engages a rack member that is vertically movable relative thereto in response to movement of the chair back. A locking member is provided which engages the gear to prevent downward movement of the chair back while still permitting upward movement of the chair back. A disengagement member also is provided to separate the gear and the locking member and maintain the gear in a disengaged position that permits lowering of the chair back.

  • Patent number: 6450577
Abstract: A tilt control is provided in an office chair to operatively connect tiltable seat and back assemblies. The tilt control permits both forward and rearward tilting of the seat and back assemblies and includes a tilt lock mechanism and a single actuator for selectively locking out forward and/or rearward tilting. In particular, the actuator has a handle which moves along a single path passing through first to third operative positions. In this regard: the first operative position locks out both forward and rearward tilting in any of a plurality of tilt positions; the second operative position locks out forward tilting but permits rearward tilting; and the third operative position permits both forward and rearward tilting.

  • Patent number: 6422652
Abstract: A height adjusting mechanism is connected between a rigid upright extending upwardly from the seat assembly and an inner shell of the back assembly. The height adjusting mechanism includes a ratcheting latch which engages a vertically elongate rack to maintain the back assembly at a selected elevation and a release lever or cam which is connected to the catch and automatically disengages the catch from the rack at the upper limit of travel of the back assembly. The release cam continuously contacts the inner shell of the back assembly and is deactivated merely by a short upward shifting of the back assembly which thereby permits the pawl to reengage the rack at any desired elevation. Accordingly, reengagement of the pawl with the rack can be accomplished at any point between the upper and lower limits of travel of the back assembly.

  • Patent number: 6361110
Abstract: A tilt control mechanism for an office chair includes a spring arrangement which permits forward and rearward tilting of the chair while also urging the chair to a normal upright position. The spring arrangement includes front and rear springs which act in combination such that the upward acting forces acting on the chair can be varied during use. The forces being applied by the front spring are adjusted by a side-actuated tension adjustment mechanism which incorporates a wedge block for adjusting the spring forces. Further, the rear springs provide a variable spring force such that the spring force is maximized when in the normal position but is decreased substantially once the chair is fully reclined. This reduction in spring force allows a user to maintain the chair in the fully reclined position with significantly less force than was required to tilt the chair rearwardly while a sufficient spring force continues to be applied by the front spring to urge the chair to the normal position.

  • Patent number: 6279859
Abstract: A keyboard support arrangement which includes both a main support pad for supporting a computer keyboard and an auxiliary support pad for supporting a computer mouse. The auxiliary pad is removably and angularly positionable adjacent either side of the main keyboard pad to provide increased convenience and flexibility of use. The auxiliary mouse pad is totally separable from the main keyboard pad, and a multi-positionable connecting structure enables the auxiliary pad to be positioned relative to the main keyboard pad at one of a plurality of angular positions.

  • Patent number: 6106070
Abstract: A chair having height-adjustable arm assemblies mounted adjacent opposite sides of the seat. Each arm assembly includes a horizontally elongated armrest which adjacent one end is connected to an upper end of a support column. The support column is axially slidably supported within an elongate support tube which projects downwardly adjacent a side of the chair seat. The support column and support tube have a cooperating linear anti-friction bearing arrangement therebetween, the latter incorporating a resilient support track to eliminate circumferential clearance. A latch mechanism includes a movable latch member carried on the column and cooperating with a plurality of latch-receiving slots formed in the support tube. The latch member is activated by a push rod which projects upwardly through the support column, and at its upper end is activated by an actuating lever which is pivoted on and projects lengthwise of the armrest and terminates in an actuating button disposed under the front end of the armrest.

  • Patent number: 6059363
Abstract: An office-type chair which includes a seat assembly and back assembly that are pivotally supported on a chair base or pedestal to support a user thereon. To increase the comfort of the user, the seat assembly is tiltable forwardly and rearwardly by way of a tilt control mechanism while the back assembly thereof is tiltable laterally from side to side, i.e. in the leftward and rightward directions by way of a back torsion mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6027169
Abstract: An office-type chair is provided with a base, a seat-back arrangement including a seat assembly which is vertically tiltable relative to the base and a back assembly which is vertically tiltable relative to both the seat assembly and bases and a tilt control mechanism operatively coupled between the base and the seat-back arrangement for permitting the back assembly and seat assembly to be respectively rearwardly and downwardly tilted away from an upright position in a synchronous but differential rate. A front tilt control device is associated with and interconnected with the tilt control mechanism for permitting the seat and back assemblies to be synchronously and nondifferentially tilted forwardly away from the upright position.
