  • Patent number: 5697733
Abstract: An apparatus for use in compacting or densifying soils includes a tubular casing having a vertical longitudinal axis and an inside surface; a hollow tubular drive shaft aligned with the vertical longitudinal axis of the tubular casing and mounted for rotation therein; a drive motor for rotating the drive shaft; a carrier attached to the drive shaft for rotation therewith; and a cylindrical roller weight in rolling contact with the inside surface of the tubular casing. The carrier engages the roller weight for rotation about the vertical longitudinal axis of the tubular casing. The centrifugal force resulting from rotation of the roller weight is resisted by the tubular casing thereby causing vibration thereof.

  • Patent number: 5388470
Abstract: The centrifugal force drive machine for generating force in a controlled direction is provided. The machine includes a machine frame having a shaft mounted thereto for rotation about its axis. The drive mechanism is provided to rotate the shaft about its axis. At least one mass is mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith. Each mass has a center of gravity which is moveable radially with respect to the shaft between the position in which the mass is rotationally balanced about the shaft and a position in which the mass is unbalanced. A control member in an operative connection between the mass and the frame is provided to constrain radial movement of the mass between the balanced position and the unbalanced position during each revolution thereof. When a mass is in the unbalanced position, the centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the mass is transmitted to the control member, thereby generating a linear force in the controlled direction.

  • Patent number: 4537534
Abstract: A drive fit coupling for joining together a pair of plain end concrete piles each having a polygonal cross sectional configuration is disclosed. A metal sleeve is provided in which a portion of the perimeter of the sleeve wall expands outwardly as the piles are driven into the sleeve causing the sleeve to fit tightly over the ends of the piles. The friction of the sleeve around the pile ends is sufficient to resist bending thereby keeping the joined piles straight during driving. Center stopping means is also provided to prevent a pile from entering the sleeve beyond the vertical center thereof.

  • Patent number: 4389763
Abstract: Apparatus and method for applying couplings of the force fit type disclosed in U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,924,413 and 4,053,247 to sections of plain end pipe to join the pipe sections together, utilizing apparatus and structures respectively exterior to and internal of the pipe sections, whereby the reaction force of a jack applying a compression force via the tensioning of the structures to a coupling at one end of a pipe section operates to exert an applying force to the coupling at the opposite end of the pipe section. Several forms of apparatus are disclosed respectively suited to different types of situations in which plain end pipe sections are joined, such as in off shore oil well drilling or in installation of transmission pipe in a horizontal position above or below ground level.

  • Patent number: 4274665
Abstract: A pipe coupling for application to plain end pipe and pipe pile by a driving force. It provides much greater tensile strength than the double sleeve type of pipe coupling disclosed and claimed in my U.S. Pat. No. 4,053,247 in that it provides greater strength under tension. In one embodiment, a pair of tapered wedge rings are disposed in spaced coaxial relation within an outer cylindrical sleeve having corresponding tapered inner surfaces to provide tapered annular sockets into which pipe sections may be forced or driven to expand the diameter of the pipe. An annular shoulder on the sleeve forms the bottom of the annular sockets. Under tension, the tapered rings wedge the pipe against the outer sleeve to resist axial removal of the pipe from the coupling socket. In another embodiment, the tapered wedge rings are disposed in coaxial relation outside the cylindrical sleeve to form annular tapered sockets which serve to reduce the diameter of the pipe as it is driven into the socket.

  • Patent number: 4053247
Abstract: The specification discloses a double sleeve coupler for coupling coaxially juxtaposed plain end steel pipe sections or pipe pile in metal-to-metal leakproof contact and at the same time providing a high strength connection under tension. A number of forms of couplers are disclosed, all essentially having two rigid metallic cylindrical sleeves of different diameter arranged coaxially one within the other with an annular space or socket therebetween at each end into which the wall of the plain end pipe or pipe pile may be driven as by hammering or by a pile driving hammer. The annular space between the sleeves expands radially outwardly in diameter toward the center of the coupler to a larger cylindrical diameter adjacent the center of the coupler. The length of the expanded inner section of the socket exceeds the thickness of the annular space forming the socket.

  • Patent number: 3958817
Abstract: The specification discloses a sleeve type coupling for providing a limited flexible connection between two sections of pipe, particularly large diameter pipe such as shore dredge pipe. The coupling has an overall length in the range of 11/2 to 2 times the diameter of the pipe sections to be coupled and is of uniform wall thickness tapering uniformly from end to end except for a relatively short section intervening between the opposite end sections. The end sections are tapered in the range of 31/2.degree. to 5.degree. with respect to the longitudinal axis and the section intervening between the end sections is of a length approximately 0.15 to 0.20 times the diameter of the pipe sections to be coupled, and is tapered at an angle to the longitudinal axis substantially larger than that of the end sections.
