  • Patent number: 4124418
Abstract: Ammonium perchlorate particles having strongly adherent wettable coatings are made by treating the particles with stong amines that displace ammonia to form amine perchlorates at the particle surfaces. Silanylamines are preferred since after amination of the perchlorate the silane groups can be hydrolyzed to siloxanes having good wettability by liquid polymeric propellant binders. The coated perchlorate can be used to produce solid propellants having improved mechanical properties and burning characteristics.

  • Patent number: 4023995
Abstract: A solid rocket propellant composition having a relatively high low pressure deflagration limit (Pdl) and thereby capable of being extinguished with only a relatively small drop in combustion chamber pressure. The composition comprises a major amount of finely divided ammonium perchlorate and a minor amount of fluoroalkyl acrylate or methacrylate polymer as a binder, the weight ratio being from about 4.5:1 to about 6:1.The fluidity of the composition prior to curing can be improved by incorporating a small amount of an acrylate or methacrylate having an oxygen-containing functional group, e.g., hydroxyalkyl, epoxyalkyl and glycerol acrylates and methacrylates.
    Type: Grant

    Assignee: Thiokol Corporation
Inventors: Russell Reed, Jr., Richard P. Cornia
  • Patent number: 3983816
Abstract: The compositions burn to produce flickering signals of flame and smoke, and which in addition emit infrared and radar signals. The compositions comprise a fuel of either magnesium, aluminum or both, a reactive chlorinated aromatic compound such as hexachlorobenzene, one or more oxidizers selected from nitrates and perchlorates of ammonium, barium, cesium, lithium, potassium, sodium, and strontium, and a binder of a fluorinated polymer.
