  • Patent number: 5820734
Abstract: A graphite composite trailing element for a headbox of a paper making machine is described. A protective layer is provided at or around pondside edges of a trailing element. The protective layer reinforces the pondside edges of the element to protect the edges from damage. The protective layer can also provide a protective sheath around the edges of the element to help prevent stock from being absorbed between the composites making up the elements. With reinforced edges and a protective sheath, the bonded composite sheets of the element are less susceptible to separation and delamination thereby resulting in an improved graphite composite trailing element. The protective layer can be made from any number of woven fiber glass mesh materials and is embedded in an epoxy base. The protective layer is compatible with the bonding and curing requirements of the composite sheets making up the trailing element.

  • Patent number: 5289007
Abstract: A sheet break detector apparatus is disclosed for detecting a break in a sheet disposed contiguously between an upstream and a downstream felt of a paper machine dryer section. The detector apparatus includes an infrared light emitter disposed adjacent to the sheet disposed between the felts for emitting a beam of infrared light towards the sheet moving contiguously between the felts. An infrared light receiver is disposed on an opposite side of the felts relative to the emitter for receiving the beam in the absence of the sheet, the beam being blocked by the presence of the sheet while the felts permit the passage therethrough of the beam. A transmitter is connected to the receiver for transmitting a signal from the receiver in the absence of the sheet. An alarm is connected to the transmitter such that in the event of sheet break, the beam of light is received by the receiver and the signal is transmitted to the alarm so that an alarm signal is generated, indicating that a sheet break has occurred.

  • Patent number: 5183537
Abstract: A headbox tube bank apparatus and method of directing flow through same is disclosed for permitting the flow therethrough of stock in a papermaking machine. The apparatus includes a tube bank frame for rigidly supporting the tube bank, the frame defining a plurality of openings. A plurality of tubes cooperate with the frame such that each tube extends through and is supported by an opening. Each tube has an upstream and a downstream portion, the upstream portion defining an internal cross-machine direction section of substantially circular configuration for maximizing the velocity of the stock through the tube.

  • Patent number: 5127141
Abstract: A self-loading controlled deflection roll has its tubular shell rotatably supported on front and back bearings which, in turn, are mounted on a bearing ring which is outwardly-movable arcuately on a pair of opposed pistons and shoes at either end of the roll. The bearing ring at each end of the roll is pivotally-linked with the roll shaft to prevent skewing movement between their longitudinal axes. The opposed pistons and shoes operating within the bearing rings at the edges of the roll shell position and load the roll into and out of nipping engagement with a mating roll independently of the operation of a separate nip shoe which controls the deflection of the roll. The pistons within the bearing rings can be used to either provide additional nip loading independent of the nip shoe, or provide a counterload in the opposite direction. Both can be used for edge correction.

  • Patent number: 5013406
Abstract: A trailing element device is disclosed for use in a headbox of a papermaking machine. The device includes a plurality of laminated sheets, the sheets being disposed within the headbox for dampening turbulence within the headbox. A binder cooperates with the plurality of sheets for binding the sheets together such that the trailing element device defines an upstream bead which extends in a cross-machine direction within the headbox. The bead is anchored within a slot defined by the headbox such that the bead is permitted to pivot within the slot so that a downstream end of the trailing element device is permitted to freely float within the headbox for attenuating the turbulence within the headbox. A wear resistant cladding is applied to the upstream bead for inhibiting wear and fracturing of the sheets caused by frictional engagement between the trailing element device and the slot.

  • Patent number: 4891874
Abstract: A self-loading controlled deflection roll is rotatably mounted with non-self-aligning bearings at either end to bearing housings which, in turn, are pivotally-mounted to support stands. The stationary support beam extending through the roll is pivotally-mounted in the same support stands. At one end of the roll, a drive shaft having a drive gear engaging a ring gear which is mounted on the end of the roll shell concentric with its surface is provided to rotatably drive the roll shell while simultaneously permitting lateral movement of the roll shell relative to the support beam during the self-loading phase of roll oepration.
