Patent number: 5991008Abstract: A method and system for compensating for scanner facet height error in a laser imaging application including a rotating polygon for directing a laser beam across a dimension of a photographic element. The present invention compensates for facet height error by measuring a scan interval for each facet of the rotating polygon and modifies the pixel clock for a subset of pixels of each scan line as a function of variations in scan intervals for the respective facets of the rotating polygon.Several advantages of the present invention have been illustrated including the low cost of such a compensation system and technique. Furthermore, the present invention is not limited in accuracy by the pixel clock as are conventional techniques. Furthermore, the modified pixels are evenly distributed over the entire length of the facet's corresponding scan line.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1997Date of Patent: November 23, 1999Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: Yun Zhong Li, Douglas D. Patent number: 5687965Abstract: A sheet supply device supplying sheets from a magazine thereof to an image forming apparatus and a mechanism for setting the magazine to a body of the image forming apparatus. The magazine storing stacked sheets is provided with reinforcing members which are disposed at side walls of the magazine to form convex portions relative thereto so as to reinforce the side walls and regulate the position of the stacked sheets in a sheet width direction. A projecting portion having an inclined surface is provided in either the magazine or a receiving portion in the image forming apparatus body to which the magazine is set. When the magazine is slid on an upper surface of the receiving portion for being set to the image forming apparatus body, a leading end of the magazine in a magazine setting direction is lifted by use of the inclined surface of the projecting portion so as to be accurately and smoothly set to the body.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1996Date of Patent: November 18, 1997Assignee: Minolta Camera Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Naoyuki Matsuda, Hajime Takei, Homare Sano, Richard R. Patent number: 5596190Abstract: A light collection device for use in a film image digitizing apparatus comprises a housing having an elongated aperture extending along a light beam scan line. The aperture receives light transmitted through a sheet of film from a light source. A diffusing member, disposed within the aperture and extending along the scan line, optically diffuses the light received by the aperture. The housing may include one or more reflective interior surfaces. A linear array of photodiodes, disposed within the housing and extending along the scan line, detects the light diffused by the diffusing member. Each of the photodiodes generates an analog signal representing an intensity of the detected light for each of a plurality of pixels. A summing circuit, coupled to each of the photodiodes, sums the analog signals generated by the photodiodes for each of the pixels to produce an output analog signal representing an overall intensity of the light transmitted through the sheet of film for each of the pixels.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1995Date of Patent: January 21, 1997Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Yun Z. Patent number: 5481657Abstract: A multi-user digital laser imaging system for imaging film from bar coded cartridges as a function of image values representative of the images to be printed. The imaging system includes memory for storing transfer functions and film models for each of several users. The transfer functions characterize the relationships between image values and expected imaged film transmittance quantities. The film models characterize the relationship between the transmittance quantities and laser drive values that will provide the appropriate film exposure. An image management subsystem generates lookup tables characterizing the relationship between image values and laser drive values on the basis of user-selected transfer functions and film models selected by the system through the use of film identification information read from the bar code. During imaging operations the image management subsystem accesses the lookup tables as a function of the image values to obtain the appropriate laser drive values.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1994Date of Patent: January 2, 1996Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Paul C. Information forming apparatus with mechanism for unsealing and sealing a cover of recording material
Patent number: 5459548Abstract: An image forming apparatus that can be charged with a sheet cassette with a resealable flexible cover includes a roller member engageable with and translatable across the cover to wind the cover on the roller member. The size of the sheet material accommodated in the sheet cassette can be determined from a bar code and the movement of the roller member can be adjusted in accordance with the size of the sheet material. Timers can be set to provide predetermined time periods relative to the translating opening and closing movement of the roller member and, if these time periods expire, an indicator can be provided to the operator.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1994Date of Patent: October 17, 1995Assignees: Minolta Co., Ltd., Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Naoyuki Matsuda, Yukiyoshi Yamakoshi, Hajime Takei, Fuminori Moro, Hiroshi Tomita, Richard R. Patent number: 5229585Abstract: A laser imaging system includes a cartridge of photographic film, a laser imager, a film processor and an image management system responsive to image input data for controlling the imager and film processor. An optical bar code with a unique cartridge ID, film size, film type information and film sensitometric information is attached to the cartridge. The laser imager includes a cartridge receiving mechanism, a cartridge opening mechanism, a laser scanning system and an optical scanner mounted to the cartridge opening mechanism. Information is read from the bar code as the cartridge is opened. The image management system controls the laser imager as a function of the input data and the sensitometric information read from the bar code. The image management system causes the film processor to develop the film as a function of the film type information read from the bar code.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1991Date of Patent: July 20, 1993Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Richard R. Patent number: 5146257Abstract: A developer replenishment control system for a continuous tone digital imaging system of the type including a laser imager for exposing pixels on sheets of photographic film as a function of digital exposure values representative of an image and a film processor with a developer replenishment mechanism for developing the imaged film. The replenishment control system includes lookup table memory and processing circuitry. Developer replenishment data in the form of an array of digital exposure values and corresponding incremental developed emulsion areal density values representative of the amount of developer required to develop the associated exposed film pixels is stored in the lookup table memory. The processing circuitry accesses the lookup table memory as a function of the digital exposure values to determine the associated incremental developed emulsion density values. The incremental developed emulsion density values for each sheet of imaged film are summed to generate replenishment control signals.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1991Date of Patent: September 8, 1992Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Richard R. Patent number: 5117119Abstract: A film densitometer for generating digital density values as a function of analog transmittance signals received at an input. A comparator coupled to the input compares the transmittance signals to one or more range references characterizing a plurality of ranges of transmittance signal magnitudes, and provides digital transmittance range signals as a function of the comparison. An amplifier amplifies the transmittance signals to provide amplified transmittance base signals. A gain control circuit coupled to the amplifier and the comparator controls the gain factor of the amplifier as a function of the magnitudes of the transmittance signals. The amplified transmittance base signals are converted to digital transmittance base values by an analog-to-digital converter. A lookup table of data characterizing the logarithmic relationship between transmittance base values and density base values is stored in base memory.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1991Date of Patent: May 26, 1992Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Paul C.
