Publication number: 20030046867Abstract: A hydrogen production apparatus for generating hydrogen comprises a first input for mixing a stream of liquid water with a stream of feed gas to produce a feed gas-water mixture stream and a heating mechanism for heating the feed gas-water mixture stream to a temperature sufficient to evaporate the water in the feed gas-water mixture stream to steam to produce a humidified feed-gas stream. A second input is provided for mixing the humidified feed-gas stream with a hydrocarbon fuel to produce a reformer reactant mixture of fuel, oxidant, and steam. A steam-methane reforming component reacts the hydrocarbon fuel and the steam in the reformer reactant mixture in a steam-methane reforming reaction to reform the hydrocarbon fuel in the reformer reactant mixture and produce a hydrogen enriched reformer product gas.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 2, 2002Publication date: March 13, 2003Inventors: Richard R. Woods, Kandaswamy Duraiswamy

Patent number: 6033793Abstract: An integrated power module for generating thermal and electrical power is provided within a housing which includes inlets for fuel and for air, a reformer chamber, a fuel cell stack, and a combustion chamber. Oxygen-containing gas, such as air, is introduced into the module along a path in one direction in heat exchange relationship with reaction products produced in the reaction chamber traveling in an adjacent path, preferably in an opposite direction, to preheat the incoming oxygen-containing gas. A nozzle having an injector for the fuel and for the oxygen-containing gas delivers these gases to the interior of the reformer chamber, where ignition is supplied by a suitable device. The reaction products from the reformer chamber are fed to a fuel cell which will consume certain of the reaction products, such as hydrogen gas, with oxygen provided from the reaction chamber acting as an oxidizing gas.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1998Date of Patent: March 7, 2000Assignee: Hydrogen Burner Technology, Inc.Inventors: Richard R. Woods, Leonard Greiner, David Moard

Patent number: 5424144Abstract: A one-piece separator plate suitable for use in a fuel cell stack comprising a single pressed metal plate having a peripheral raised seal region on a face of said pressed metal plate and a corresponding peripheral recessed seal region on the opposite face thereof, the corresponding peripheral recessed seal region forming a peripheral channel on said opposite face of the pressed metal plate. A peripheral insert ring is disposed in the peripheral channel, which insert ring and said peripheral raised seal region form seals between the faces of the pressed metal plate and an adjacent active cell component.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 1993Date of Patent: June 13, 1995Assignee: M-C Power CorporationInventor: Richard R. Woods, Jr.

Patent number: 5143340Abstract: A support between the floor (22) and the roof (24) of e.g. a mine stope, is made by using an inflatable container comprising an inner bag (10), received in an outer bag (12). An inlet valve (14) extends through both bags as does a relatively higher pressure relief outlet valve (16). In use, air is pumped into the container until it is fully inflated, following by a grout, the air escaping via the valve (16) until the inner bag (10) is filled.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1992Date of Patent: September 1, 1992Assignee: Fosroc International LimitedInventors: Richard R. Wood, Norman J. Cook, John R. Thorpe

Patent number: 5127234Abstract: An improved process and apparatus for absorption cooling in which an absorbent-refrigerant solution from an absorber is heated in a generator producing absorbent-refrigerant vapor, the absorbent-refrigerant vapor is separated and condensed producing pure liquid refrigerant and an absorbent-enriched solution, the absorbent-enriched solution is returned to the absorber, the pure liquid refrigerant is evaporated producing pure refrigerant vapor, and the pure refrigerant vapor is absorbed into the absorbent-enriched solution. A dilute absorbent-refrigerant solution and a concentrated absorbent-refrigerant solution are generated simultaneously in a solution concentration means disposed between the absorber and generator. The dilute absorbent-refrigerant solution is heated to produce a first pure refrigerant vapor and the absorbent-enriched solution. The first pure refrigerant vapor is condensed in the generator in thermal contact with the absorbent-enriched solution producing pure liquid refrigerant.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1991Date of Patent: July 7, 1992Assignee: Gas Research InstituteInventor: Richard R. Woods, Jr.

Patent number: 5112160Abstract: This invention relates to a rock anchor which includes an elongated element which is composed of a plurality of elongated tension members which are arranged around the long axis of the elongated element in a circumferential spaced relationship to provide a passage through the elongated element, slots between the tension members which extend over the length of the elongated element, an anchor at one end of the elongated element, for holding the element in a hole and a tensioning arrangement at the other end of the element for use in tensioning the elongated element in the hole. The anchor is preferably a wedge anchor and the invention extends to a method of anchoring the rock anchor in a hole by means of a rod which is passed up into the elongated element from the mouth of the hole to tension the elongated element and activate the wedge anchor to lock the anchor against the side of the hole to hold the elongated element in the hole under tension.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1989Date of Patent: May 12, 1992Assignee: Delkor Technik LimitedInventors: Erik D. Jensen, Richard R. Wood
