    Abstract: A photochromic ophthalmic lens exhibiting a gradient photochromic effect is produced in accordance with a heat treating process wherein the development of photochromic properties in a selected limited portion of the lens is suppressed by the action of vapor produced utilizing a porous refractory carrier material containing an evaporable liquid.
