  • Patent number: 5711153
Abstract: Repeatable no-backlash adjustable hydraulic stops are disclosed which have a rigid body which defines a cavity. One or more elastically deformable end plates are mounted in closing relation to the body cavity for enclosing and encapsulating an amount of liquid therein. A plunger in the body is movable in fluid displacing relation to the cavity for providing an accurate elastic displacement of the enclosing end plates which elastic displacement or movement is accurately repeatable by rotating an actuator rod which engages the plunger for varying the fluid displacing relationship to the interior of the cavity. An initial static pressure is formed within the cavity for pre-stressing the components and providing for no-backlash adjustment. Locating pads are formed exteriorly of the flexible walls defining an accurate stop position.

  • Patent number: 5014924
Abstract: In a winder for continuously winding a web material into rolls on successive cores, roll changing apparatus for cutting and transferring the web material from a full roll to an empty core includes two sets of water jet nozzles mounted for reciprocating movement in opposite directions lengthwise of the core to which the web is to be transferred. During the momentary interval of roll changing, the oppositely moving jets cut the web along a generally saw tooth pattern, and at the same time, the water which cuts the web also wets its cut leading end and the adjacent surface of the core, thereby causing adhesion of the end of the web to the core for a sufficient interval for this end of the web to be covered by the next wrap on the core.

  • Patent number: 4431140
Abstract: A turret-type winder particularly adapted for winding of impervious sheet-type web materials, such as plastics, provides self-contained and pivotally mounted pressure rolls which contact the cores and the winding roll throughout the entire winding process and throughout the indexing of the arms from a core loading station to a roll unloading station while maintaining the relative geometry of contact such that the web contacts the pressure roll at or before contacting the winding roll for effectively excluding the entrapment of air between the winding layers.A method of winding from a roll changer or other apparatus for providing a web of material includes the movement of the spindle end of the arms of a turret-type changer through the path of web leading to a winding roll to the back or remote side of the web so that the web lead is brought between the spindle arms and between the empty spindle and the winding roll.

  • Patent number: 4422586
Abstract: A cutting blade is mounted on an articulated arm for movement into location adjacent a new core and a free running span of the web on a winding machine. An adhesive strip is applied to the new core and then the core is rotated. A pressure roller on an opposite side of the web from the new core then urges the web into engagement with the surface of the new rotating core. As the adhesive strip rotates into contact with the moving web, it causes the web to be deflected into the knife which results in severing of the web. The leading edge of the severed web is maintained adhered to the adhesive strip so that no fold back of the leading edge occurs as the web continues to wind on the new core.

  • Patent number: 4326680
Abstract: A web cutter for a surface winder provides a cutting blade which is moved into position adjacent the web and held stationary during cutting of the web. A web deflector is mounted for rotation about the axis of the drive drum on the opposite side of the web from the knife and when in the cutting position, deflects the web into the knife for severing the web. The device includes a guide shoe supported adjacent the knife for deflecting the severed edge of the web around the new core to be wound.

  • Patent number: 4326679
Abstract: A web cutting blade is secured to an articulated arm which moves the blade towards and away from the web to be severed. The blade is moved to a position adjacent a free span of the web and is held in a stationary position during the severing of the web. A web guide shoe is also mounted on the articulated arm and captures the severed end of the web and directs it around a new core so that it will envelop the core and begin winding on the core so that the roll change can be effected during a continuous web movement. A web defelector member positioned on an opposite side of the web from the cutting blade is also mounted on an articulated arm which can move the deflector towards and away from the web. After the blade has been positioned adjacent the web, the deflector member urges the web into engagement with the blade so that the web will be cut due to the movement of the web across the blade.

  • Patent number: 4199118
Abstract: A brake control system for an unwinder is provided which measures the line speed of the moving web and the rpm of the roll and produces electrical output signals proportional to each which signals are operated upon to produce a main brake control signal to apply a braking force proportional to the roll diameter as it is constantly decreasing, and a further output signal which is proportional to the energy in the roll so that additional braking force modification will occur during acceleration and deceleration of the web in order to maintain essentially constant web tension. An additional feedback from a web tension measuring device is also provided which adjusts the braking force to produce an actual tension equal to the desired tension which has been included in the main braking force output signal proportional to the roll diameter.

  • Patent number: 4170457
Abstract: A rotating separator removes air coating from pigmented paper coating liquid stock. The separator employs a cylindrical tank which is mounted for rotation about a vertical axis. The separator is operated in a filled condition and an air laden or froth fraction is removed from a radially central region of the tank at the top of the tank, while a non-rotating pickup receives air free coating from a region adjacent the wall of the tank near the tank bottom. A method of treating and applying such a coating includes the steps of pumping an air laden coating into a centrifugal separator while maintaining the separator in a filled condition, removing an air froth from the separator for return to the supply tank, and delivering a substantially air free coating directly to the inlet of a control without the imposition of any intermediate pumping apparatus. The centrifugal pumping action of the separator supplements the pressure head on the coating material.

  • Patent number: 4111377
Abstract: A surface winder and roll changing mechanism includes primary arms rotatable through 360.degree. between a substantially horizontal initial position where a new core can be loaded, a second position where the primary arms transfer the new core with the roll being formed thereon to secondary arms, and an intermediate position between the initial and second positions in which the web is cut and started on the new core, the primary arms being rotatable in one direction to return them to the initial position. In one embodiment, a grab knife is carried by the primary arms, and the web cutting knife is separately mounted on the frame, while in a second embodiment, both the grab knife and the cutting knife are carried by the primary arms. A single cutting knife or a reciprocating double cutting knife assembly may be used in either embodiment.

  • Patent number: 4007656
Abstract: A moving web of material having a high tendency to elongation under stress, such as woven and non-woven plastic fiber or filament webs, is cut by the combined action of a cutting knife which executes its cutting stroke generally in line with and upstream of the web and a grab knife which holds the web at a station spaced closely downstream from the path of the cutting knife and thereby isolates the small length of web between the two knives while the cutting knife completes its stroke.
