  • Publication number: 20090226975
Abstract: The invention provides methods for controlling the density of different molecular species on the surface of a solid support. A first mixture of different molecular species is attached to a solid support under conditions to attach each species at a desired density, thereby producing a derivatized support having attached capture molecules. The derivatized support is treated with a second mixture of different molecular species, wherein different molecular species in the second mixture bind specifically to the different capture molecules attached to the solid support. One or more of the capture molecules can be reversibly modified such that the capture molecules have a different activity before and after the second mixture of molecular species are attached. In particular embodiments, the different molecular species are nucleic acids that are reversibly modified to have different activity in an amplification reaction.

  • Publication number: 20060193966
Abstract: Novel processes for treating soy proteins with multi-anionic reagents are disclosed. The processes include treating an acid precipitated soy protein curd with a multi-anionic species to modify the electrostatic charge on the protein molecules to improve functionality of the resulting soy protein containing composition when used in acidic environments. The resulting soy protein-containing composition has improved solubility, suspendability, and stability in acidic environments, and is highly suitable for use in acidic beverages. The processes may optionally include steps for using a stabilizing agent and for a phytase treatment to further improve the soy protein-containing composition.

  • Publication number: 20060153287
Abstract: A video stream containing encoded frame-based video information includes a first frame and a second frame. The encoding of the second frame depends on the encoding of the first frame. The encoding includes motion vectors indicating differences in positions between regions of the second frame and corresponding regions of the first frame, the motion vectors defining the correspondence between regions of the second frame and regions of the first frame. The first frame is decoded and a re-mapping strategy for video enhancement of the decoded first frame is determined using a region-based analysis. Regions of the decoded first frame are re-mapped according to the determined video enhancement re-mapping strategy for the first frame so as to enhance the first frame. The motion vectors for the second frame are recovered from the video stream and the second frame is decoded.

  • Publication number: 20060146040
Abstract: Video frames of a performance are provided at times at a slower input rate and at other times at a faster input rate. A video display is automatically switched to a first display scan mode when receiving frames at the slower input rate, and switched to a second display scan mode when receiving frames at the faster input rate. The second display scan mode being different than the first display scan mode. For example, the display scan modes may have different frame rates or the first display mode may be progressive and the second display scan mode may be interlaced.

  • Publication number: 20060130156
Abstract: First and second portions of memory are provided in a storage module (e.g. hard drive or flash card). The first portion is for storing content (e.g. music, videos, pictures) and the second portion is for storing information (e.g. keywords or tables of content) required to access the content. When, unauthorized use of the storage module (disconnection from a playing device, opening the module, opening a playing device containing the module, attempting to access content when the module is disconnected from an authorized playing device) is detected then further access to the information stored on the second part is prevented. Access can be prevented, for example, by blank erasing the second portion. A power source (e.g. battery) is provided for the detecting and preventing of access, the access also being prevented if the power source fails.

  • Publication number: 20060114136
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for switching between particular decoders within a plurality of decoders, each decoder adapted to decode bit streams having a unique format. The apparatus comprises format detectors which output format indicators based on information from the bit stream. Logic responsive to the format detector output may determine a particular decoder among the plurality of decoders. The particular decoder determined by the logic decodes the formatted bit stream. At least one switch, responsive to the determination of the logic, connects the formatted bit stream to the particular decoder. The format detectors detect at least one of the frame information, or start code, the packet header information, and the code word values in a portion of a coded content of the bit stream, wherein the code word values, derivatives thereof, or a pattern of word values, are unique to the bit stream format.

  • Publication number: 20060053455
Abstract: A method and system for synchronizing signals. First and second signals are sent (compressed or uncompressed) from a source to a receiving apparatus of a receiving system. The first signal has content of a first modality (e.g., audio) and the second signal has content of a second modality (e.g., video). The first and second signals are to be displayed on a display apparatus of the receiving system. The first and second signals have been time-synchronized at the source. If the first and second signals are not synchronized in time when received at the receiving apparatus, then the first and second signals may be time-synchronized at the receiving apparatus either manually or through timestamping of both signals at the source, in conjunction with use of a real-time clock at the receiving apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20060026091
Abstract: A system allowing traders, etc. to use instant messaging (IM) (or other non-FIX based) communications to input trading instructions directly into a broker's Order Management System (OMS) for managing/executing trades. Accordingly, trading instructions may be provided electronically directly from a buy-side trader, and directly to a sell-side broker's/brokerage's OMS, without the need for the sell-side broker to manually re-key the order into the sell-side firm's OMS. Further, trading instructions are provided in electronic format directly to the broker's OMS without the need for the buy-side trader to have an expensive FIX based OMS or associated FIX connection, which is also expensive, thereby allowing relatively smaller investment houses/buy-side organizations to enjoy the benefits of electronic delivery of trading instructions directly to brokers' OMS.

  • Patent number: 6835537
Abstract: A method for normalizing the intensity of G bands in sequencing methods which utilize dITP is presented. The use of dITP normally results in decreased intensities of G bands which occur after A bands, i.e., in the sequence AG. It has been discovered that the use of ddITP in place of ddGTP or in conjunction with ddGTP helps to normalize the intensity of the G bands following A bands. This aids in preventing errors in reading sequencing chromatograms and allows for extended reads of sequencing chromatograms as compared to methods which utilize dITP without the use of ddITP.

  • Patent number: 6810082
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the selective peaking of portions of a video signal is provided. The video signals, such as those transmitted in compressed form, in accordance with MPEG Standards, can be presented as blocks of data encoded using Discrete Cosine Transforms (DCT). The Discrete Cosine Transform coefficients corresponding to the chrominance values of the signal can be obtained and analyzed. The analysis and corresponding amounts of enhancement (peaking) can be performed on a block-by-block, I-frame by I-frame, basis to selectively peak portions of a video signal. If the DCT coefficients for a portion of the signal exceed or fall within a pre-selected value or range, that portion of the signal can be subjected to peaking. For example, if the high frequency horizontal DCT coefficients exceed (or fall within) a pre-set threshold value or range, a horizontal peaking circuit can be set to peak that portion of the signal.

  • Patent number: 5532744
Abstract: A method and decoder for decoding a hierarchically coded digital video bitstream which can process a high resolution television picture in real time and which is made, up of a number of individual decoder modules, connected in parallel, which each have less real time processing power than is necessary, but which when combined, have at least the necessary processing power needed to process the bitstream in real time. The decoder includes a system controller which detects the hierarchical code indicating bits and slices and communicates this information to a slice parser which dynamically allocates the bitstream among the digital modules as needed on a per slice basis.
