  • Publication number: 20110059306
Abstract: A design method for making a bituminous mixture that is used to form a vapor-permeable layer of pavement is provided. This design procedure includes preparing one or more bituminous mixture test specimens, measuring the performance of these specimens, and selecting a desirable bituminous mixture for paving that is vapor-permeable based on the performance of the specimens. Another aspect of the present invention is the selected bituminous mixture, which includes aggregate and a bituminous binder. The aggregate may be selected such that no more than about 5% by mass of the aggregate and preferably no more than about 3.5% by mass of the aggregate is able to pass through a 75 ?m sieve. The selected bituminous mixture may have an Air Permeability Value that is at least about 8 cm2 so as to reduce its propensity for blistering during and after construction. Still further, the selected bituminous mixture may have desirable fatigue resistance and may be substantially water-impermeable.

  • Publication number: 20060000493
Abstract: An embodiment of the invention is a method of removing photoresist. More specifically, an embodiment is a method of removing photoresist utilized to pattern the top electrode metal layer in a polymer memory device substantially without damaging the underlying polymer or top electrode metal by utilizing a high pressure photoresist solvent spray.

  • Publication number: 20050183633
Abstract: A method of selecting an asphalt binder for use in constructing a high modulus layer of bituminous pavement is provided. This method includes measuring the complex shear modulus of one or more binders at a temperature of not more than about 30° C., measuring the creep stiffness of one or more binders at a temperature near the lowest in-service temperature at the depth of the layer at which the bituminous pavement is being placed, and selecting an asphalt binder for the high modulus layer using the complex shear modulus and creep stiffness measurements. A further aspect of the present invention is a method of formulating an asphalt binder that has a desirable complex shear modulus and creep stiffness for use in making the high modulus layer. This method of formulation includes mixing a stiff asphalt binder and a soft asphalt binder together to form a binder having a complex shear modulus of at least about 2 MPa at 30° C.

  • Publication number: 20050022696
Abstract: A highly strain tolerant, substantially moisture impermeable, reflective crack relief interlayer is provided. The interlayer includes a polymer modified asphalt binder mixed with a dense fine aggregate mixture containing a substantial amount of manufactured sand. The interlayer mix is designed using a fatigue test and a stability test. Preferably, a hot mix asphalt overlay that is compatible with the interlayer, as well as the demands of local traffic and climate, is placed over the interlayer so that a protected, smooth paved surface is provided. The interlayer may delay the first appearance of cracks and the severity of cracks for several years compared with traditional hot mix overlays and extend pavement service life.
