Patent number: 11029168Abstract: A computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computer in a vehicle, cause the computer to carry out a method for determining an energy-optimal path for the vehicle from an initial location to a final location, the vehicle corresponding to a vehicle energy model. Based at least on the initial location, an initial time, the final location, the vehicle energy model, and an environmental forecast a global path is generated. The global path includes a final maximum net energy path and a plurality of waypoints. Based on the global path a local path from the present location to a next waypoint of the plurality of waypoints is generated. Whether a net energy gain is generated by a deviation from the global path to the next waypoint of the plurality of waypoints is determined. Generating a local path is repeated until the vehicle reaches the final location.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2018Date of Patent: June 8, 2021Assignee: The Government of the United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Richard Stroman, Daniel J. Edwards, Daniel S. Newton, John J. Bird, Jacob W. Langelaan, Vladimir Dobrokhodov

Publication number: 20060008866Abstract: According to the present invention there is disclosed a system and a method for detecting the presence of human fecal contamination on objects, such as a protein source, a worker's hands, work surfaces, tools or utensils. In one embodiment, there is included a supporting structure which supports a diffuse light source, the light source emitting light having a wavelength from the blue portion of the electromagnetic spectrum effective to elicit fluorescence from the fecal matter at wavelengths in the 600 nm to 800 nm range. A third wavelength of interest in the 600 nm to 800 nm range is also used as a reference control. Thereafter the wavelengths are combined in a series of mathematical steps to develop an algorithm or process to detect the presence of the human fecal material.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 7, 2005Publication date: January 12, 2006Applicant: eMerge Interactive, Inc.Inventors: Ricky Flick, Gavin Poole, Richard Stroman

Patent number: 5077477Abstract: A method and apparatus for the detection of pits and abnormalities in various stone fruits. The apparatus transmits a first plurality of beams of light (18) across inspection zone (14) and transmits a second plurality of beams of light (22) across inspection zone (14) in a direction opposite to beams of light (18). As a stone fruit (10) passes through inspection zone (14), a first plurality of sensors (32) and a second plurality of sensors (34) detect the variations in the intensity of the transmitted beams of light. The light transmittance and reflectance characteristics of the stone fruit are analyzed to detect the presence of a pit or internal or external abnormality.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1990Date of Patent: December 31, 1991Assignee: Richard StromanInventors: Richard Stroman, Charles Kasmire

Patent number: 5026982Abstract: A method and apparatus for non-destructive internal and external inspection of produce, including the detection of pits in various stone fruits. The apparatus transmits a first plurality of beams of light (20) across inspection zone (14) and transmits a second plurality of beams of light (30) across inspection zone (14) in a direction transverse to beams of light (20), thus forming an X-Y plane. As article of produce (10) passes through inspection zone (14) along the Z-axis, a first plurality of sensors (24) and a second plurality of sensors (34) detect the variations in the intensity of the beams of light and the data is processed to produce a three-dimensional "picture" of the article of produce. Size, symmetry, external defects, and internal structure are determined as a result of processing the data collected. The apparatus and method can be used for detecting pits or surface defects, and for sorting or rejecting articles of produce based on size, symmetry, external defects or internal structure.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1989Date of Patent: June 25, 1991Inventor: Richard Stroman
