  • Publication number: 20170369517
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention report compositions, systems and methods for obtaining xylo-oligosaccharide-rich extracts from agricultural by-product streams. In certain embodiments, compositions and methods are directed to producing xylo-oligosaccharide-rich extracts with increased amounts and/or concentrations of degrees of polymerization (DP) of 3 or greater (DP3+). In other embodiments, compositions and methods relate to the production of products containing high soluble fiber, for example, xylo-oligosaccharides of DP3 or greater, from oat hull by-products. In yet other embodiments, xylo-oligosaccharides-rich extracts derived from oat hulls can be further processed to generate useful liquids for example, liquids containing soluble solids and powdered sweeteners and other useful consumer products.

  • Patent number: 8512979
Abstract: A system including an apparatus is presented for treatment of biomass that allows successful biomass treatment at a high solids dry weight of biomass in the biomass mixture. The design of the system provides extensive distribution of a reactant by spreading the reactant over the biomass as the reactant is introduced through an injection lance, while the biomass is rotated using baffles. The apparatus system to provide extensive assimilation of the reactant into biomass using baffles to lift and drop the biomass, as well as attrition media which fall onto the biomass, to enhance the treatment process.

  • Patent number: 8445236
Abstract: A method is provided for producing an improved pretreated biomass product for use in saccharification followed by fermentation to produce a target chemical that includes removal of saccharification and or fermentation inhibitors from the pretreated biomass product. Specifically, the pretreated biomass product derived from using the present method has fewer inhibitors of saccharification and/or fermentation without a loss in sugar content.

  • Patent number: 7998713
Abstract: Ethanol was produced using biocatalysts that are able to ferment sugars derived from treated biomass. Sugars were obtained by pretreating biomass under conditions of high solids and low ammonia concentration, followed by saccharification.

  • Patent number: 7910338
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for treating biomass composed of integrated feedstocks to produce fermentable sugars. One aspect of the methods described herein includes a pretreatment step wherein biomass is integrated with an alternative feedstream and the resulting integrated feedstock, at relatively high concentrations, is treated with a low concentration of ammonia relative to the dry weight of biomass. In another aspect, a high solids concentration of pretreated biomass is integrated with an alternative feedstream for saccharifiaction.

  • Patent number: 7819976
Abstract: A method for treating biomass was developed that uses an apparatus which moves a biomass and dilute aqueous ammonia mixture through reaction chambers without compaction. The apparatus moves the biomass using a non-compressing piston. The resulting treated biomass is saccharified to produce fermentable sugars.

  • Patent number: 7807419
Abstract: Processes for saccharification of pretreated biomass to obtain high concentrations of fermentable sugars are provided. Specifically, a process was developed that uses a fed batch approach with particle size reduction to provide a high dry weight of biomass content enzymatic saccharification reaction, which produces a high sugars concentration hydrolysate, using a low cost reactor system.
