  • Patent number: 4302645
Abstract: A gas-blast switch having a housing composed of a hollow insulator body. Within such housing there are arranged a set of fixed contacts and a set of movable contacts surrounded by a blast chamber as well as a blast nozzle operatively associated with the set of movable contacts. The blast nozzle is connected with a pump device. This pump device comprises a pump cylinder movable in conjunction with the movable contact set. The pump cylinder coacts with a stationary pump piston. In the pump chamber or compartment defined by the pump cylinder there merges a nonreturn or check valve which opens towards such pump chamber. By means of such nonreturn valve there is sucked-up pressurized extinguishing gas during the course of the cut-on switching-on stroke of the gas-blast switch. The pump chamber is connected by means of this nonreturn valve with a supply compartment which, in turn, communicates by means of labyrinth-like extending flow paths with the blast chamber.

  • Patent number: 4230920
Abstract: Within a gas tight insulating housing of a gas-blast switch there are arranged a fixed contact surrounded by a blast chamber, a movable contact and a blast nozzle movable together with said movable contact. The blast nozzle is connected to a pump device containing a pump cylinder movable along with the movable contact. The pump cylinder is displaceable upon a stationary piston. Means are coupled with the pump cylinder and which means, during the course of the cut-off stroke of the gas-blast switch, are impinged by the extinguishing or quenching gas heated by the arc and augment the operation of the pump device, and thus, the cut-off movement. The means coupled with the pump cylinder incorporate an impact plate which bridges the substantially jacket or shell-shaped blast chamber between the pump cylinder and the inner wall of the insulating housing preferably up to the region of a ring-shaped or annular gap.

  • Patent number: 4220838
Abstract: A gas-blast switch having a hollow support insulator, and and at least one switching chamber housing supported thereon and within which there is arranged a set of fixed contacts, surrounded by a blast chamber, and a set of movable contacts. A blast nozzle coacts with the movable contacts and is connected with a pump device having a pump cylinder surrounding a pump chamber and movable with the movable contacts. The pump cylinder is displaceably arranged upon a stationary piston. A check valve opens towards the pump chamber. During the cut-on stroke pressurized gas is sucked by the valve into the pump chamber. The latter is connected by the check valve with a supply compartment communicating via inlets with the blast chamber and the internal space of the support insulator. A further valve is responsive to the pressure increase in the blast chamber, which valve, when responsive, interrupts the connection between the internal space of the support insulator and the inlets.

  • Patent number: 4103131
Abstract: A puffer-type interrupter for a circuit breaker has a stationary piston received in a movable cylinder which is connected to the movable contact of the interrupter, and which also carries a nozzle for producing a blast of gas through the separating contacts of the interrupter when the cylinder is moved over the piston. An auxiliary piston is slidably mounted relative to the main piston, and mechanism is provided to connect the two pistons together when the interrupter contacts are closed, and to connect the auxiliary piston to the movable cylinder after the contacts have separated.

  • Patent number: 4011421
Abstract: A gas-blast switch comprising two contact elements which can be brought into and out of engagement with one another, a drive means for actuating at least one of said contact elements, and a pump device consisting of a piston and cylinder actuatable in response to the switching movements of the gas-blast switch. During the cut-off movements of the gas-blast switch the pump device conveys an extinguishing agent out of a pump compartment of the pump device through a nozzle into an extinguishing or blow-out compartment or chamber, the nozzle being constructed to take-up the switching arc existing between the separating contact elements. The piston consists of a plurality of piston portions guided to be relatively displaceable in a gastight fashion within one another and dividing the piston surface confronting the pump compartment, one of the piston portions being positively connected with the drive means.

  • Patent number: 3992600
Abstract: An electrical switch comprising a drive mechanism for moving a switch component at a pre-selected variable speed. A movable additional mass is connected at a drive branched-off the drive mechanism of the moved switch component, said branch drive possessing a transmission ratio which is variable as a function of the position of the moved switch component.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention relates to a new and improved construction of an electrical or electric switch having a drive mechanism for moving a switch component at a speed which varies in a pre-selected manner. For instance when separating the contacts of certain switches it can be necessary to displace the moved contact, i.e. the moved switch component at a variable speed in order to take into account the different requirements regarding the cut-off or separation operation e.g. the extinguishing of the arc and the gentle slowing down during as rapid as possible switching operation.

  • Patent number: 3988554
Abstract: A gas-blast switch possessing a fixed contact and a movable contact and a blast or discharge nozzle surrounding one of the contacts, the blast nozzle having its inlet connected with the outlet of a pump compartment for an extinguishing gas, this pump compartment can be pressurized by the switch cut-off or switching-off movement, and wherein the narrowest location or throat of the blast nozzle is arranged in the direction of blowing downstream with respect to the aforementioned one contact. The outlet of the pump compartment can be closed by a check or nonreturn valve which closes in the direction of the pump compartment. The inlet of the blast nozzle is connected via a gas chamber with the outlet of the pump compartment, the outlet of the gas chamber confronting the blast nozzle can be closed by means of a further check or nonreturn valve which closes in the direction of the gas chamber.

  • Patent number: 3962605
Abstract: A high-speed grounding apparatus for metal encapsulated high-voltage switching installations embodying a grounding bolt which, by igniting a propellent charge, can be forwardly shifted out of its rest position into its grounding or earthing position for electrically connecting the capsule with a conductor encapsulated therein. An ignition device is provided for the propellent charge, this ignition device being triggered by an increase in pressure in the switching installation.

  • Patent number: 3941962
Abstract: A gas blast circuit breaker has fixed and movable contact sets, the latter mounted on a cylinder slidable on a fixed piston to generate a gas blast on separation of the contact sets. Each contact set consists of radially inner and outer contacts, the inner contacts separating later than the outer. A gas blast nozzle mounted on the cylinder and between the radially inner and outer movable contacts has a throat downstream of the inner contact, communicating with the interior of the cylinder by way of an inner duct containing the inner contact, and an annular outer duct, so arranged that on separation of the contacts relatively cool fresh quenching gas is directed through the inner duct over the inner contact and arc.
