  • Patent number: 7242964
Abstract: A method and apparatus for directing energy in a plurality of azimuth directions. The amount of energy directed in the azimuth direction of a mobile terminal is a function of the location and acceptable receive strength of at least two mobile terminals. The function is such that the strength of an EM field at the location of any of these two mobile terminals is at least as large as, but not significantly larger than, needed for that mobile terminal to acceptably receive the signal carried by the EM field. The amount of energy to be directed in the azimuth direction of a mobile terminal is arrived at by first determining for each one of the mobile terminals an EM field that would have to be generated for the mobile terminal in order to provide an acceptable receive strength thereat, the determining taking into account the strength, at the location of the mobile terminal, of EM fields previously determined for others of the mobile terminals.

  • Patent number: 6718184
Abstract: A method for processing signals from multiple receiving/transmitting elements that define an array antenna is disclosed. The method includes measuring uplink signals from the elements of the array antenna to form a directional downlink antenna response. A first covariance matrix between pairs of uplink signals is determined for desired signal components of the measured uplink signals. A second covariance matrix is determined for noise and interference components of the measured uplink signals. An antenna processing system computes adaptive weights based on the first covariance matrix, the second covariance matrix and a loading term to in effect form a directional downlink radiation pattern. The loading term represents a balance adjustment between a first performance rating of a particular coverage area versus second performance rating of the wireless communication system.

  • Patent number: 6448937
Abstract: A phased array antenna includes an active or beam forming array portion, and active parasitic elements that transmit and/or receive signals. The parasitic elements serve the dual purpose of providing a uniform impedance for elements at the edge of the array portion of the antenna while also providing active elements that are used to transmit and/or receive signals. The active parasitic elements may transmit and/or receive at the same frequency as the array portion or at a different frequency than the array portion. It is also possible for the active parasitic elements to have a different polarization than the elements of the array portion.

  • Patent number: 6304214
Abstract: An antenna array system includes a first array for operating in a transmit mode and a receive mode and a second array spaced apart for operating in the receive mode. A receiver adjusts a receive radiation pattern in the receive mode and provides a control signal for a transmit radiation pattern of the transmit mode.

  • Patent number: 6232921
Abstract: A method and system for adaptive signal processing for an antenna array reduces the requisite computations for executing an adaptive algorithm that combines or digitally filters baseband receive signals. The system receives uplink electromagnetic signals from a phased array and uplink electromagnetic signals from a diversity array during the reception of a desired electromagnetic signal transmitted by a desired mobile station. The uplink signals are converted into baseband signals for digital signal processing. The baseband signals are observable as a series of successive time slots. The system determines uplink coarse combining weights associated with the uplink baseband signals of the phased array and downlink coarse combining weights associated with the downlink baseband signals of the phased array. The baseband uplink signals are summed into as few as one resultant baseband signal during or after application of the coarse combining weights to the baseband uplink signals.
