Patent number: 7115234Abstract: A method and apparatus for reacting a plurality of different mixtures in parallel in a semi-batch or continuous mode is provided. Each reaction is contained within a reactor vessel, the reactor vessels combined into a reactor block. Reactant(s) to be added during the reaction are kept in a header barrel, which has a plunger to feed reactant(s) from the header barrel through a transfer line into the reactor vessel. The plunger is moved using a drive system. The header barrels are optionally combined in a header block. The header block is sealed to a plate containing the transfer lines, which in turn is sealed to the reactor block. A latch mechanism is provided for easy sealing of the reactor and header blocks to the plate. The entire apparatus may be placed on a rocker or rotating plate for mixture as the reaction is proceeding.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2002Date of Patent: October 3, 2006Assignee: Symyx Technologies, Inc.Inventors: J. Christopher Freitag, Damian Hajduk, Ralph B. Nielsen, Adam Safir, Richard Tiede

Patent number: 6994827Abstract: Parallel semi-continuous or continuous reactors are disclosed. The parallel reactors preferably comprise four or more reaction vessels. The reaction vessels are preferably small volume reaction vessels, preferably pressure reaction vessels, and/or preferably integral with a common reactor block. The reaction vessels can comprise shaft-driven stirrers. At least two, preferably at least three or at least four liquid feed lines can provide selective fluid communication between each of the reaction vessels and one or more liquid reagent sources. Additional features, suitable in connection with parallel reactors or with single reaction vessels are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2001Date of Patent: February 7, 2006Assignee: Symyx Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Adam Safir, Ralph Nielsen, Thomas H. McWaid, Richard Tiede, Lynn Van Erden

Patent number: 6878344Abstract: An apparatus for use in testing a plurality of compositions in parallel. The apparatus includes an upper plate having a plurality of openings extending therethrough to form upper fluid chambers and a lower plate having a plurality of openings extending at least partially therethrough to form cavities. A central plate having a plurality of openings extending therethrough to form central fluid chambers is positioned between the upper and lower plates with the central chambers in alignment with the upper chambers and the cavities. A porous sheet is interposed between the upper and central plates such that an upper surface of the sheet is in contact with fluid within the upper chamber and a lower surface of the sheet is in contact with fluid within the central chamber. The apparatus further includes a flexible membrane positioned between the lower and central plates such that changes in pressure within the cavities or fluid chambers cause deflection of the membrane to force fluid to pass through the porous sheet.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2002Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Symyx Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Paul Mansky, Richard Tiede, Steve Havadtoy

Publication number: 20030190260Abstract: A combinatorial chemistry reactor system for the parallel processing of reaction mixtures. The system comprises a frame, a head mounted in fixed position on the frame, and a reactor block having a plurality of wells therein for containing reaction mixtures. The reactor block is movable with respect to the head between a first position in which the reactor block and head are assembled for conducting reactions in the wells and a second position in which the reactor block is removed from the head for providing access to the vessels. Gaps in the reactor block between the wells serve to thermally isolate the wells from one another. Other features relating to pressure relief, reactor block temperature control, and sensor mounting are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 5, 2002Publication date: October 9, 2003Applicant: Symyx Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Tony N. Wheeler, Lynn Van Erden, William H. Chandler, Richard Tiede, Robert J. Saxton, Anil Guram

Patent number: 6113488Abstract: A method of retrofitting ventilation systems with security grilles. A first step involves providing a security grille that is larger in size than an existing air duct to be covered by the security grille. The security grille has a flow area sufficient to permit a desired number of air exchanges per hour within a holding cell. A second step involves forming an enlarged plenum chamber where the existing air duct passes through a wall into the holding cell. The plenum chamber has a flow area compatible with the security grille. A third step involves attaching the security grille over the plenum chamber, such that the security grille is fed by a flow of air through the plenum chamber.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1998Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Assignee: Safety Concepts Inc.Inventor: Irvin Richard Tiede
