Patent number: 11867876Abstract: An optical article includes a substrate with front and rear main faces, one main face coated with a columnar micro- or nano-structured coating. The substrate and optical article are transparent in at least a part of the visible region ranging from 380 to 780 nm, along at least one incidence angle. The columnar micro- or nano-structured coating includes an array of columns including each a core and an upper layer covering the core, the core and the upper layer being structurally and/or chemically different and have light absorbing properties with an extinction coefficient “k” ?10-2 in the spectrum 250-2500 nm and are able to cause a change in transmission or in reflection of incident light through the optical article as a function of the angle of incidence of light. Also disclosed is a method for manufacturing an optical article including a columnar micro- or nano-structured coating.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2019Date of Patent: January 9, 2024Assignees: Corporation de l'Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Essilor InternationalInventors: William Trottier-Lapointe, Bruce Faure, Bill Baloukas, Richard Vernhes, Oleg Zabeida, Ludvik Martinu, Sasha Woodward, Nicolas Desjardins-Lecavalier, Julien Gagnon

Publication number: 20230258844Abstract: A coated article including a first antireflective (AR) coating supported by a glass substrate, wherein the first coating may include, moving away from the glass substrate: a dielectric first high index layer; a dielectric first low index layer; a dielectric second high index layer; a dielectric second low index layer comprising an oxide of silicon; a dielectric third high index layer comprising an oxide of niobium; a dielectric first medium index layer, wherein the third high index layer comprising the oxide of niobium is located between and directly contacting the second low index layer comprising the oxide of silicon and the first medium index layer; a dielectric third low index layer; and an overcoat layer; wherein the first coating contains no IR reflecting layer based on silver and/or gold; wherein, from the perspective of a viewer of the coated article, the first coating may be configured so that the coated article has a film side reflective ?E* value of no greater than 3.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 17, 2022Publication date: August 17, 2023Inventors: Jens-Peter MÜLLER, Richard VERNHES, Istvan SZIRBIK, Nikolett HEGEDUS, Allen CHU, Jochen BUTZ

Patent number: 11279651Abstract: A low-E coating has good color stability (a low ?E* value) upon heat treatment (HT). Thermal stability may be improved by the provision of an as-deposited crystalline or substantially crystalline layer of or including zinc oxide, doped with at least one dopant (e.g., Sn), immediately under an infrared (IR) reflecting layer of or including silver; and/or by the provision of at least one dielectric layer of or including an oxide of zirconium. These have the effect of significantly improving the coating's thermal stability (i.e., lowering the ?E* value). An absorber film may be designed to adjust visible transmission and provide desirable coloration, while maintaining durability and/or thermal stability. The dielectric layer (e.g., of or including an oxide of Zr) may be sputter-deposited so as to have a monoclinic phase in order to improve thermal stability.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2020Date of Patent: March 22, 2022Assignee: GUARDIAN GLASS, LLCInventors: Yongli Xu, Brent Boyce, Salah Boussaad, Philip J. Lingle, Jingyu Lao, Richard Vernhes
