Patent number: 7441799Abstract: The application provides non-circular steering wheel designs and steering wheel-mounted airbag housings, cushions, and modules for use in vehicles using non-circular steering wheels. The airbag housings and modules of the invention provide supplemental reaction surfaces to support an airbag cushion mounted on a non-circular steering wheel. Airbag cushions of the invention utilize the steering wheel, steering column or steering wheel shroud as a partial reaction surface to support an airbag cushion.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2003Date of Patent: October 28, 2008Assignee: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventors: Mark L. Enders, Richard Welford

Patent number: 7234725Abstract: An airbag module assembly including a module housing, a door and a door retainer ring. The module housing forms a compartment adapted to contain an inflatable restraint airbag cushion in a stored state. The module housing has at least one open end, and includes at least one side wall and at least one face wall generally perpendicularly disposed relative to the at least one side wall about the at least one open end. The door retainer ring is adapted to be joined to the module housing about the module housing open end. The door includes a circumference portion and has an inner surface and an outer surface. The door, in a static state, is disposed over the module housing to enclose the module housing open end with at least the circumference portion of the door disposed between the door retainer ring and the module housing. The circumference portion of the door includes at least one release portion and at least one hinge section.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2004Date of Patent: June 26, 2007Assignee: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventor: Richard Welford

Patent number: 7125037Abstract: The cushion retention system includes a cushion, at least one tab attached to the cushion, and a supporting member having an intermediary region and at least one aperture. The cushion is positioned in a folded condition. The supporting member is disposed along an outer periphery of the cushion. The tab, which includes a head and a narrow neck, interlocks with the aperture on the supporting member to retain the supporting member along an outer periphery of the folded cushion. In this interlocked condition, the supporting members apply an inward compressive force to retain the cushion in a folded condition.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2003Date of Patent: October 24, 2006Assignee: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventors: Roger Tallerico, Richard Welford, Kurt Gammill

Publication number: 20050173907Abstract: A deployment guide assembly to guide the deployment trajectory of an airbag is disclosed. The deployment guide assembly guides the deployment of an inflatable curtain adjacent a side structure of a vehicle. The deployment guide assembly includes a guide member slidably engaged within guide rails. The guide member is capable of being in a retracted position and a guiding position. The deployment guide assembly is mounted inside a headliner adjacent the inflatable curtain in the retracted position. When the inflatable curtain deploys, it contacts the guide member and through friction, moves the guide member to the guiding position. The guide member in the guiding position directs the deployment of the inflatable curtain parallel to a side structure of a vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 5, 2004Publication date: August 11, 2005Inventor: Richard Welford

Publication number: 20050082797Abstract: An expanding net integral with an inflatable airbag curtain is disclosed. The inflatable curtain includes an inflatable region that provides impact protection for a vehicle passenger in a lateral collision or rollover situation. The inflatable curtain also has an uninflatable region integral with the inflatable region for covering the side window openings not covered by the inflatable region. The uninflatable region could extend adjacent and below the inflatable region to provide for occupant retention in a collision or rollover situation.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 16, 2003Publication date: April 21, 2005Inventors: Richard Welford, Kurt Gammill

Publication number: 20050029781Abstract: A passenger airbag assembly having a first cushion and a second cushion is disclosed. An inflator mechanism that independently inflates the first cushion and the second cushion may also be added. The inflator mechanism may either be a dual stage inflator or two separate inflators. Preferably, the airbag assembly is designed such that the inflator mechanism begins the inflation of the first cushion prior to beginning the inflation of the second cushion. A housing may also be added to the airbag assembly. The housing encloses the inflator mechanism and is attached to the first cushion and the second cushion. The airbag assembly may be designed such that when the first cushion and the second cushion are inflated, the second cushion is positioned between the first cushion and the vehicle's windshield. Furthermore, the airbag assembly may also be made such that when the first cushion is inflated, the first cushion will push a vehicle occupant towards the vehicle's passenger seat.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2003Publication date: February 10, 2005Inventors: Mark Enders, Richard Welford, Larry Rose, Patrick Jamison, Trudy Lewis, Guy Nalder, Bradley Smith, Timothy Martersteck, Randy Jones
