  • Patent number: 6037724
Abstract: A surgical power tool is disclosed including a power console and a handheld motor unit. The power console provides controlled power and to the handheld motor unit. Pressure sensitive switching elements on the handheld unit provide signals to the power console which are transformed into operating power to the motor unit including variable speed, speed range, forward/reverse, and safety. The handheld motor unit includes a chuck or tool receptacle and a Hall effect or other radiation field detector which response to the presence of a magnet or other radiation device as a part of the surgical tool, to identify the tool installed and provide a control signal to the motor, e.g., speed range limitation. The handheld motor unit housing is sealed and autoclavable.

  • Patent number: 6022354
Abstract: A drill bit configured for maximum bone penetration harvests and morselizes bone fragments from a harvest site for use in reparative bone grafting. A suction port on a removable harvest cap enables the bone fragments and irrigation fluids to be drawn into a distal end of a cannula portion of a collection reservoir. A filter screen mounted within the chamber of the collection reservoir enables the irrigation fluids to be removed while the bone fragments are retained in the reservoir. A retention plug can be inserted into the distal end of the cannula to allow the removable cap and drill to be removed. The reservoir can be transported to a reparation site, the retention plug removed and a plunger inserted into the open upper end of the collection reservoir to deliver morselized bone fragments out of the distal end of the cannula to the site to be restored.

  • Patent number: 6000940
Abstract: A collet for holding a rotatable tool such as a bur or drill bit having a stepped shaft including a drive shaft having a stepped internal diameter mating with the external diameter of the bur or drill shaft, a plurality of hardened balls mounted in openings in the sleeve, a locking sleeve having a tapered surface movable with the force of a spring against the balls to force the balls against the shaft to lock the shaft in the sleeve. A rotatable locking collar is movable to release the spring force to release the shaft for removal and replacement of the tool.

  • Patent number: 5925048
Abstract: A self-drilling, self-tapping screw for use in repairing broken bones. The screw is made of a high strength material selected from the group consisting of titanium alloys, chrome cobalt, and high strength resinous polymer. The screw has threw segments: a tip region, a body region and a head region. The tip and body regions have a retention thread formed over substantially their entire lengths. The tip has an included angle .alpha. in the range between 45.degree. and 50.degree.. The head region is specifically designed to maximize the torque it can withstand and minimize the amount of material removed in formation of the recess. The head has a generally frusto-conical shape with an included angle of between 90.degree. and 120.degree. to prevent pull through while minimizing the head's profile. The retention threads on the tip region and the body region have similar shapes and pitches with the pitch on the tip region being slightly smaller than the pitch on the body region.

  • Patent number: 5816812
Abstract: A self-tapping dental prosthetic implant has a blunt leading end, a tapered first section which has a uniform minor diameter and a uniformly increasing major diameter, a second section having uniform minor and major thread diameters, a third section with a uniform major thread diameter and a outwardly tapering minor diameter and a fourth section which has a diameter larger than any other segment and a relatively low profile (i.e., short axial length). A thread-cutting groove extends over a substantial portion of the threaded length of the implant. A stepped drill with a tip having a large included angle is used to drill a pilot hole permitting anchoring in the proximate and distal portions of cortical bone by the threaded implant.

  • Patent number: 4985031
Abstract: An osteotomy blade saw is provided in left-offset and right-offset embodiments for performing sagittal ramus osteotomies. The blade saw has first and second straight arm portions forming an obtuse angle between them, the end of the second arm terminating in a neck portion which angles acutely away from the plane containing the arms and terminates in an end portion on which a cutting blade is mounted. The blade lies in a plane parallel to the plane containing the arms and is offset to the right and left depending on the embodiment. Supplying reciprocating linear motion to the first arm allows the saw to be used in cutting bone. The blade saw in its two preferred embodiments can be used to score and cut the underside of the right and left inferior borders of the mandible, respectively, through incisions inside the mouth.

  • Patent number: 4959065
Abstract: A bone plate for use in repairing bone fractures or osteotomies wherein the bone plate is provided with a positioning member which allows for ease of handling of the bone plate during the fixation process and wherein the bone plate has a upper surface having smooth or rounded surfaces which allows the upper surface of the bone plate to be juxtapositioned to soft tissue without fear of damaging the soft tissue, as by sharp edges.
