    Abstract: A thermoplastic molding composition comprising a transparent resinous component suitable for tinting by dip-dye method is disclosed. The resinous component is selected from the group consisting of (i) a blend of (co)polycarbonate resin and (co)polycaprolacone, and (ii) a copolymer containing carbonate and caprolactone structural units. The composition, characterized in that it is free of photochromic colorants, may be molded by thermoplastic means, and the molded article is then dipped-dyed by immersion in a tinting solution. The tinted articles are suitable for making, among others, optical lenses.

    Abstract: A process for making a copolymeric resin is disclosed. Accordingly, component (a) and component (b) are introduced into an extruder under conditions designed to promote reactive blending therebetween in the presence of a transesterification catalyst. Component (a) is a wet aromatic polycarbonate resin containing moisture in an amount greater than 0.02 weight percent and having units conforming to ##STR1## wherein D is a divalent residue of a dihydroxy compound. Component (b) is a lactone-siloxane block copolymer having structural units conforming to ##STR2## wherein m is 1-90, n is 60-150, R is an alkyl or a phenyl radical, p is 2-12 and q is 2-20. Surprisingly, use of moisture-containing polycarbonate in the process yields a copolymer having good properties, although a corresponding process where the lactone-siloxane block copolymer reactant has a smaller number of repeating units yields inferior product.

The preparation of the resinous component entails reactive blending in the presence of a transesterification catalyst of polycarbonate, (co)polyester and a lactone siloxane copolymer.

The preparation of the copolycarbonate entails reactive blending of polycarbonate with a suitable lactone siloxane copolymer in the presence of a transesterification catalyst.

    Abstract: A gamma radiation-resistant polycarbonate-disulfide resin is disclosed. The incorporation of disulfide linkages in the structure of polycarbonate was found to enhance the resistance of the resin to the discoloration caused by exposure to gamma radiation. Accordingly, processes for the incorporation of disulfide linkages in the molecular backbone, as end-groups or as side chains are disclosed. The polycarbonate-disulfide resin may be used as a molding resin in the context of thermoplastic molding compositions as well as a stabilizing additive in polycarbonate resin.

    Abstract: A process for preparing a block oligocarbonate is disclosed. The oligocarbonate conforms to ##STR1## where R denotes hydrogen or ##STR2## and where A denotes an aromatic carbonate structure conforming to ##STR3## where Ar is an aromatic radical, n is 2-6 and where B is the residue of an aliphatic polyol is disclosed. In the process a high molecular weight aromatic polycarbonate is reacted, in the melt and in the presence of a catalyst, with an aliphatic polyol. The block oligocarbonate is useful as a reactant in a process for the preparation of copolymers.
