    Abstract: A method for improving survival after radiation exposure using mesenchymal stem cells as vehicles to deliver extracellular superoxide dismutase is provided. The invention encompasses a method to improve survival after radiation exposure that harnesses the power of migration of mesenchymal stem cells to radiation injured tissues and adenovirus-mediated extracellular superoxide dismutase gene therapy for oxidative stress caused by radiation exposure. The invention relates to methods for producing mesenchymal stem cells secreting biologically active extracellular superoxide dismutase. Methods for treating a human patient after radiation exposure by intravenous administration of mesenchymal stem cells secreting biologically active extracellular superoxide dismutase are also disclosed.
