Patent number: 11800002Abstract: Apparatus and methods to communicate audio data from either an active wireless device or a requesting wireless device to one or more audio reproduction devices that are simultaneously communicatively coupled to both the active wireless device and to the requesting wireless device are disclosed. Responsive to a request from the requesting wireless device to transmit audio data to the one or more audio reproduction devices, the active wireless device determines whether to transmit audio data from the requesting wireless device based at least in part on an audio status of the active wireless device and a set of predetermined arbitration criteria that prioritizes among applications and operating system processes that generate the audio data.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2020Date of Patent: October 24, 2023Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Robert D. Watson, Ganesha Adkasthala Ganapathi Batta, Anthony Guetta, David John Shaw, Craig Dooley, Chris Saari, Gregory Novick, Nathan De Vries, Sriram Hariharan, Patrick Ian Bernhard, Dana McLaughlin, Jeffrey Chandler Moore, Patrick Lee Coffman, Jonathan Anderson Bennett, Deepak Iyer, Albert Riley Howard, Jr., Jason Conn

Patent number: 11605274Abstract: Techniques are provided for contacting emergency response services when certain conditions are met. In some instances, it may be determined, by a wearable device, whether a user has responded to a first user interface prompt displayed in response to detection of a physical event associated with the user. In accordance with a determination that the user has not responded to the first user interface prompt after expiration of a first time period, certain actions may be performed. For example, a countdown timer may begin to run for a second timer period. During the second period, an audio alert and a haptic alert may be output by the wearable device. In accordance with a determination that the user has not responded to a second user interface prompt prior to expiration of the second time period, a communication channel request may be transmitted to an emergency response service by the wearable device.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2020Date of Patent: March 14, 2023Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Albert Riley Howard, Catherine B. B. Morrison, Christopher P. Saari, Heather E. Daniel, Kevin M. Lynch, Ronald Keryuan Huang, Sherif Mohamed, Telford E. Forgety, III, Matthew W. Crowley, Eamon F. Gilravi

Patent number: 11595789Abstract: A device implementing a system for missed communication notification may include at least one processor configured to receive, from a server over a first communication channel, a message indicating that another device initiated a communication with the device over a second communication channel at a particular time. The at least one processor may be further configured to determine, by the device, whether the communication was established with the other device over the second communication channel at the particular time. The at least one processor may be further configured to provide, for display, an indication of the message based at least in part on a determination that the communication initiated by the other device was not established over the second communication channel at the particular time.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2020Date of Patent: February 28, 2023Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Kevin M. Lynch, Albert Riley Howard, Ryan A. Williams, Nicholas J. Circosta, Andreas E. Schobel, Thomas Chathoth Abraham, Vibhor Goyal, Christopher P. Saari

Patent number: 10878683Abstract: Techniques are provided for implementing audio looping techniques. In some instances, it may be determined, by a wearable device, whether a user has responded to a user interface prompt displayed in response to detection of a physical event associated with the user. Additionally, the wearable device may transmit a communication channel request to an emergency response service in accordance with a determination that the user has not responded to the user interface prompt after expiration of a time period. Further, the wearable device may transmit an audio message to the emergency response service at least in response to the emergency response service accepting the communication channel request.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2019Date of Patent: December 29, 2020Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Albert Riley Howard, Catherine B. Patent number: 9003393Abstract: There is provided a method for HTML directed adaptive features for mobile applications. By presenting user interface portions of the application as HTML documents referenced from a manifest file, the manifest file may be updated from a remote server without directly modifying a native binary of the application. By registering URL handlers for application functions in the native binary of the application, and by modifying a local file manifest stored on a mobile device, the scope of application functionality can be updated by adding, removing, or modifying URLs. The manifest files may further be adapted using specific contexts, such as device hardware, location, user profile data, and other information. Advantageously, application update approval processes through application marketplaces may be bypassed since the native binary is kept intact, allowing for more timely and relevant updates.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2014Date of Patent: April 7, 2015Assignee: Disney Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Bicrumjit Singh Bhullar, Albert Riley Howard, Jr., Anthony Young

Patent number: 7840527Abstract: Techniques for detecting, managing, and presenting syndication XML (feeds) are disclosed. In one embodiment, a web browser automatically determines that a web site is publishing feeds and notifies the user, who can then access the feed easily. In another embodiment, a browser determines that a web page or feed is advertising relationship XML, and displays information about the people identified in the relationship XML. In yet another embodiment, a browser determines that a file contains a feed and enables the user to view it in a user-friendly way. In yet another embodiment, feed state information is stored in a repository that is accessible by applications that are used to view the feed. In yet another embodiment, if a feed's state changes, an application notifies the repository, and the state is updated. In yet another embodiment, a feed is parsed and stored in a structured way.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2006Date of Patent: November 23, 2010Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Jessica Kahn, Jens Alfke, Albert Riley Howard, Jr.

Patent number: 7818659Abstract: Techniques for presenting and managing syndication XML (feeds) are disclosed. In one embodiment, a user can modify how a feed is displayed, such as which content (and how much) is displayed, in what order, and how it is formatted. In another embodiment, a modification regarding how a feed is displayed is stored so that it can be used again at a later time. In yet another embodiment, a user can create a custom feed through aggregation and/or filtering of existing feeds. Aggregation includes, for example, merging the articles of multiple feeds to form a new feed. Filtering includes, for example, selecting a subset of articles of a feed based on whether they satisfy a search query. In yet another embodiment, a user can find articles by entering a search query into a search engine that searches feeds, which will identify one or more articles that satisfy the query.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2006Date of Patent: October 19, 2010Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Jessica Kahn, Jens Alfke, Sarah Anne Wilkin, Albert Riley Howard, Jr., Scott James Forstall, Stephen O. Patent number: 7580954Abstract: Techniques for changing operations performed relative to digital signal data that represents a recording of a signal are provided. A digital signal data-editing program displays an ordered list of items. Each item in the list corresponds to one or more operations that a user has instructed the program to perform relative to the digital signal data. The order of the items in the list determines the order in which the operations corresponding to those items are performed relative to the digital signal data. In response to user input, the program may perform a change such as inserting a new item into the list, removing an existing item from the list, altering the order of one or more items in the list, etc. The program subsequently modifies the display of the list to reflect the change. The change may be performed without disturbing the last-ordered item in the list.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2005Date of Patent: August 25, 2009Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Christopher J. Moulios, Nikhil M. Bhatt, Curtis A. Bianchi, Albert Riley Howard, Jr.
