  • Publication number: 20140306381
Abstract: This disclosure provides methods of flash sintering and compositions created by these methods. Methods for sintering multilayered bodies are provided in which a sintered body is produced in less than one minute. In one aspect, each layer is of a different composition, and may be constituted wholly from a ceramic or from a combination of ceramic and metallic particles. When the body includes a layer of an anode composition, a layer of an electrolyte composition and a layer of a cathode composition, the sintered body can be used to produce a solid oxide fuel cell.

  • Patent number: 8837418
Abstract: Methods and system are provided for managing and monitoring allocation of RF spectrum resources based on time, space and frequency. A network may be enabled to allocate excess spectrum resources for use by other network providers on a real-time basis. Allocated resources may be transferred from one provider with excess resources to another in need of additional resources based on contractual terms or on a real-time purchase negotiations and settlements. A network may be enabled to monitor the use of allocated resources on real-time basis and off-load or allow additional users depending on the spectrum resources availability. Public safety networks may be enabled to make spectrum resources available to general public by allocating spectrum resources and monitoring the use of those resources. During an emergency, when traffic increases on a public safety network, the public safety networks may off-load bandwidth traffic to make available necessary resources for public safety users.

  • Publication number: 20140196498
Abstract: Evaporative heat transfer system. The system includes a substrate and a plurality of substantially parallel, spaced-apart ridges extending from the substrate forming vertical liquid manifolds therebetween. A nanoporous membrane is supported on the ridges and a pump delivers a dielectric fluid across the ridges. The fluid is drawn through the liquid manifolds via capillarity provided by the nanoporous membrane and evaporates to dissipate heat flux through the substrate. A preferred dielectric fluid is pentane. It is preferred that membrane porosity vary across the membrane to tailor thermal resistances to limit temperature rises.

  • Patent number: 8540797
Abstract: A method to introduce ceramic particles into liquid metal through the polymeric precursor route by cross-linking organic precursor into a hard polymer, which is added to the liquid melt for in-situ pyrolysis of the organic into the ceramic phase. The starting material, the organic, for the above process can be in the form of a liquid or a solid. If it is a solid it is usually dissolved into a solvent to create a liquid form. The organic is then cross linked either directly by a thermal process, by adding a catalyst, or by the well known sol-gel process into a hard polymer. It is this hard polymer which is then pyrolyzed into a high temperature ceramic material by the process outlined above.

  • Publication number: 20120003547
Abstract: An electrode comprising a cast-film architecture wherein a silicon-based polymer precursor is cast on to a current collector directly from the liquid, and processed in-situ to create a high performance anode for lithium ion batteries. In this in-situ process the liquid polymer is cross-linked and pyrolyzed to create a cast-film-anode architecture. The cast-film architecture is distinctly different from the conventional powder-based ex-situ process whereby the polymer precursor is made into powders by a ex-situ process; with these powders being then combined with conducting agents and binders to create a paste which is screen printed on a current collector to produce electrode with a powder-anode architecture. The cast-film architecture obviates the need for conducting agents and binders, simplifying the production process for the anode, without a loss in performance. The energy capacity per unit volume of the anode material is two to ten times greater for the cast architecture.

The silicon-based ceramic surface may be self-supporting or may be deposited as a thin film on a carbonaceous substrate. The carbonaceous surface may be self-supporting or be in the form of a film that is supported on a substrate of a fourth material, where the fourth material has the function of providing physical support to the substrate. The said carbonaceous substrate can be made from a solid material or from a porous structure, of which carbon nanotube paper, also known as Bucky paper, is one example.
