Patent number: 7352834Abstract: The invention relates to a method for synchronizing the phase of a code available at a receiving unit with the phase of a corresponding code of which samples are received at said receiving unit. The synchronization comprises comparing a received code sample with different samples of the available code, the respective sample of the available code being shifted in phase for each comparison by a predetermined amount until a correspondence with the received code sample is determined or until an interrupt of the synchronization occurs. In order to accelerate the synchronization, it is proposed to continue the synchronization after an interrupt with a newly received code sample and with available code samples proceeding from the code phase of the available code reached in the synchronization before the interrupt. The invention relates equally to a corresponding receiving unit and to a communication system comprising such a receiving unit.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2003Date of Patent: April 1, 2008Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Timo Hakasalo, Risto Paatelma

Patent number: 7302235Abstract: A synchroniser for use in a receiver which receives signals, wherein the synchronizer provides a digital control signal, the control signal defining a plurality of different levels; controls the level provided by successive ones of the control signals, successive ones of the control signal defining different values; and estimates the difference between the levels of successive ones of the control signals.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2001Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Risto Paatelma, Juha Kuronen, Heikki Berg

Patent number: 6717934Abstract: A method is disclosed for operating a wireless mobile station to receive a time slot sent through a radio channel from a transmitter. In a GPRS embodiment the time slot has a Header portion and a Data portion, wherein the Header portion contains information for specifying whether the Data portion is modulated using 8-PSK modulation or &pgr;/4-shifted DQPSK modulation. When modulated using 8-PSK modulation, the Data portion includes a plurality of Pilot symbol sequences at predetermined locations.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1999Date of Patent: April 6, 2004Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Pekka Kaasila, Risto Paatelma

Patent number: 6463042Abstract: A method for operating a wireless terminal in a wireless communication system that operates with frames time divided into slots each having a Header portion followed by a Data portion. The system is arranged to transmit a downlink slot so that the Header portion is transmitted at a higher power level than the Data portion when the Data portion does not contain valid data so as to reduce system interference. This is known as a Quasi-Discontinuous Transmission (Q-DTX) mode of operation.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1999Date of Patent: October 8, 2002Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones Ltd.Inventor: Risto Paatelma

Patent number: 6327256Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, by which to transmit packet data from a mobile station to network infrastructure of a TDMA, cellular communication system at an increased rate. The increased rate is provided while still operating the mobile station in half-duplex mode of operation. In one implementation, the mobile station is operable to effectuate triple-rate communication of packet data at a multi-rate defined in the GPRS-136 standard.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1999Date of Patent: December 4, 2001Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones LimitedInventors: Heikki Paivike, Risto Paatelma

Patent number: 6029057Abstract: The present invention relates to a diversity method in a radio system in which fadeouts are slow, such as a WLL system. The duration of fadeouts is typically in the magnitude of seconds. A radio receiver (4) according to the present invention is characterized in that the expected quality of a signal is predicted (9) for a specific interval to come based on the measured quality of the signal, and a signal is selected (3) based on the predicted quality of the signal. In a time-divided digital system, the quality of a signal is measured from a burst and the quality of the signal is predicted for several frames ahead, for example for 10 frames, based on the measured quality of said burst and one or more bursts preceeding said burst. The predicted quality is compared with a long-term weighted average, which may be the average over 50 frames, for example. If the predicted quality is below the weighted average, the signal is changed.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1997Date of Patent: February 22, 2000Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones Ltd.Inventors: Risto Paatelma, Markku Tarkiainen, Tapani Westman
